A Page a Day Kindle Challenge – Any Takers?

Pinterest

Hi everyone! Well my Mom’s been here for the last 2 days and I’m loving it! She always feels exhausted just watching me if I get work done, burdening herself with guilt that she’s not as fast, etc.

I nag her. You think I kick YOUR butt? You oughta see me with the ones I love and am not afraid to offend! Poor Mom!

So here’s the deal, folks. My Mom always says she never has time to work on HER stuff. But HER stuff is what’s going to eventually get her out of the process of working for each dollar. You know – the residual stuff. She doesn’t think of herself as a go getter. But it’s all in her head.

And here’s the funny thing. I just saw this image on her Facebook page:

I’m going to try to help train her into thinking she’s a shark. She’s fearless. She’s courageous. She has this in her! ROAR! (Since a shark can’t roar maybe we should call her a lioness).

I just stepped away from my keyboard and went in there before she fell asleep to tell her my demands. Every morning, and this goes for YOU too – she will write ONE page of a book to go on Kindle. BEFORE she does stuff for other people. She will always make sure their work gets done. She will NOT give herself the same courtesy.

Tomorrow morning before she leaves here, she will map out her book. She has a topic in mind so I’m asking for an outline before she leaves. Then starting Monday it’s ON, baby! One page a day before anything else.

I want her to do a non fiction report about the same size as my vegetarian one. Something short so she can get it on there and begin seeing something residual.

She now knows she’s being railroaded into this and held accountable by all of you. Sometimes, that’s simply what it takes. She’s laughing about it (even though I know it terrifies her). But if we’re all in this together, it won’t seem so scary, will it?

Now you can certainly do MORE than 1 page if you want – but don’t do 5 pages and a day for 3 days and then quit because you’re not getting your other work done. Because that’s not what I’m asking you to do, is it?

I’m only asking for 1 page for 30 days and if you double up a couple of days, fine since many of you need a day off. But in 30 days from Monday I want to see new publications going up on Kindle.

If you’re in Kindling, then maybe do one of Geoff’s suggested summary books if you want to start there.

I want you to think about this. If you get one book up and it earns you even $100 a month – you could do that and have $1,200 a month in a year from this alone. If you have a $2.99 book, you’d only have to sell what, about 48 copies a month to do that?  Because Amazon takes 30%, you get 70% so that’s $2.093 times 48 = $100.464. So yeah, let’s shoot for that.

The 48 copies a month are what we’ll work on in month 2,  okay? So month 1 is get it up! Month 2 is get it promoted. You’ll only have to sell 1.6 copies per day to make your goal. Again, horrible at math so let me know if I’m wrong.

I just want us to get the things GOING and guess what? If you want some real critiques on what you can do to make yours better? Maybe we’ll all help on that. Critique covers, content, like, tag and review (no phony stuff) when warranted. IF you ask for it. If you don’t want the $0.02, just launch and do it alone. But you can run a free promo day and list it on here and we can all download and help each other make better products.

THAT’S what it’s all about – not back scratching or blowing smoke up someone’s rear to be nice. That isn’t a friend.

So are you ready? We start tomorrow – Sunday July 21st, 2012. We begin by choosing a topic and mapping out an outline. Be ready to create your page a day come Monday morning.

Late? No problem – jump in at any time and don’t feel you have to ask my permission.

I already know what mine’s going to be – part 2 of my Online Career Plans course. I have the ecover ready and it’s just waiting for content. So I just have to write it.

If you need an ecover, I will say this – it’s what determines whether or not I buy an eBook online. Not everyone’s like this – I am. If it’s a DIY amateur job, I don’t buy. I just don’t. And I’m seeing lots of book bloggers advising the same thing re: what sets Kindle authors apart.

I use Rich at QuickSiteStudio.com. No kickback for me there, no affiliate income. He’s just good and FAST. And affordable. His ecovers are $47 so save up the $1.57 for that every day too if you can. Couch change, eBay something you never use – whatever.

If you want this, you’re going to do it. If you half ass want it, you won’t.

See you Sunday for a check in on whether or not you’ll be onboard!
Tiff ;)

Hey, Tiffany, Could I take one of my special reports, which of course has great info in it, and which I wrote, and put it up as a Kindle book? Is that cheating?

  • Marg says:

    Hi Tiff,

I’m in. I’m already publishing a non-fiction series, but I keep promising myself to start on my fiction – so that’s what I’ll work on for the 30 days. :-)

    Marg

  • Mathea says:

Yeah, I am already started on this. I use the website: http://www.750words.com and I write every morning just to clear my mind.

But the last week, I said, I am going to write my fiction book 750 words a day at a time. So I have been doing this for about 3 days. Wrote well over that most days. It’s 30 minutes and I can get it done!

    Thanks for the challenge!

  • Cheryl says:

I WANT this! I am in. I’ll take Sunday to outline and hit the ground running Monday.

Thanks Tiff – I don’t know how you manage it but you are managing to be a mentor that is almost like being there.

Or maybe…when the student is willing the teacher appears?

    Love ya!

    Cheryl

  • Mary K. says:

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
    honey badger
just the kick in the ass I need!

    it’s on!

  • Louise Jones says:

    Thanks. I’ve got this!

  • Kay says:

I’m for sure in! I’ve already been writing it in my head for a week, now I just need to get it down on paper then get organized & structured. Or vice versa, I’m on this!

    • Tiffany says:

      Good deal Kay!

      • Katie says:

Actually, if you can write it in your head, you can use Dragon Naturally Speaking to get it down on paper. I’ve had Dragon since version 2 or something – never could get it fully “trained” and it drove me nuts trying to get it to recognize what I was saying.

HOWEVER – I’m using v11 now (I think 11.5 is the newest), and I find it’s pretty darned good, right out of the box! I actually sat in the car and dictated a new Introduction to my third-in-a-series Kindle book the other day – amazing!! And pretty painless, too. I think I’m really going to like this because it really does make it faster once you get used to dictation. Pretend you are talking to a friend, but just make sure you have a complete thought before you speak or otherwise it just captures everything and you still have editing LOL.

Oh, and if nothing else, use it to create your outline, synopsis, major ideas, etc. and then do your writing “by hand”.

        Good Luck!!

Oh, and I’ll be finishing up my 3-Part series and then starting on the next series. Tiff, you are a wonder – thank you SOOOO much for this – it’s phenomenal!

  • Joyce Reid says:

I’m in Tiffany. I’m currently working on two longer books for Kindle but need to get a short one up there. I bought your vegetarian book (reviewed) as well as the Entrepreneur one (currently reading it and will leave a review when finished) and am wondering how many typewritten pages were these?

  • I’m joining this wild crowd!! Love the idea. A page a day first!!!!!!!!! Can’t wait to read everyone’s books! Lets go!

  • Karla says:

Ok…I think I can do that! This is the first thing I have read about Kindle…where do I get info on how to go about it….

  • Olive says:

Thanks Tiffany. I needed the “kick in the butt” to get going on writing every day again. Researching my topic tonight and getting ready for the challenge.

  • Sharan says:

Head procrastinator here & I’m in. I’ve been working on some ideas and now it’s time to “put up or shut up”. I got Geoff’s course when he first offered it and shame on me for letting it set.

  • Rick says:

    Hey Tiff,

Whoa you are on fire! Gotta love the passion behind the kick ass-ion.

I am most definitely in. Great timing since I am tired of reading and planning and ready to write.

I am calling the Kindle Writing time the Honey Badger Hour.

    Let’s Get Ready To Kkkkiiiinnnnnnnndddlllle!

  • Kym Kirk says:

It’s Sunday down under Tiffany so I’m onto my outline today and writing my first page tomorrow.

Question. Are we looking at 500 words per page – 11pt or 12pt single spacing?

I’m enjoying the Kindling course, so much good information to get my head around.

  • Krista says:

I’m in! Based on some of your previous posts, I turned a long blog post into a short report that has sold ok so far (better than I expected!) and I really need something like this to get my butt in gear to write some more. Thanks for helping me to get myself in gear–again! :)

  • Racquel says:

    Hey Tiff:

I think your post came just in time for me. I already have one book published on Kindle and I am currently working on my second book.

However, with it being summer and me having to help out with babysitting and i just got a part time online job to take care of regular expenses i feel like i don’t have time to work on my book. I have always aimed for 5 pages each day but i find that i am able to average 3 pages when i get serious and down to business.

My problem is that i do everyone’s work before my own and i end up being so tired at the end of the day to write my book. I really need to start writing my own book before i do other work :) .

    I think i needed your post :)

  • Sandy says:

Yes I’m in, great idea :) I have stuff already nearly finished, but I have another idea that I kind of mapped out – will finish the mapping and do a page a day. I was thinking about finding other people doing Geoff’s course and setting up a Meet Up in my town, but this is even better :)

  • Lisa says:

I’m in. I read this today and I already have my fire lit under my butt. $0 to $1000 a day in less than a year. http://www.reddit.com/r/writing/comments/m2ejo/broke_1000_in_one_day_for_the_first_time/?limit=500

    • Tiffany says:

Yes Lisa I saw that from someone (you? someone else?) and compiled it into a word doc on the Kindle Beginner Challenge page with his answers. Good read!

  • Cheryl Chartier says:

I am in. Already writing a non fiction ebook for kindle. This will kick my butt in gear. I can use some critic reviews as well.

So many things happening at my house ive put stuff on hold. When it rains it pours here. Also my husbands older daughter just went into labor tonight. It’s 1:18 am Sunday morning so she may have already given birth.

Glad to be a part of this group. Thank you Tiff.

  • jason says:

I am in. At the moment proof reading one fiction book ready for kindle but no point just sitting around time to start a new one. Might as well do it together :)

  • Lauri says:

    I’m In!!!

Quick question. Does one page in Word translate to one page in Kindle? From some of the books I have read, it seems like much less than that, but I could be wrong?

Thanks for the kick, I mean jump-start!

    L.

    • Tiffany says:

No I think it’s longer but also depends on the user’s font size.

      • Lauri says:

Okay so, a page in Kindle is longer than a page in Word? Just trying to make sure my book is ample size while not giving myself a headache over it.

But font size makes sense. And some people use lots of bullets which of course, helps to create a longer book without using as many words and such.

I am having a difficult time beefing up some of my points. But I want to be sure to have an outstanding product out there as well.

        • Tiffany says:

No opposite – a page in Word is longer than Kindle I would think. Depends on the settings of the Kindle reader. My advice? Forget beefing up. Just write what needs to be said. Readers can feel fluff and filler. :)

          • Mathea Ford says:

You might want to change your size of paper in word – on the page layout tab – click on size, then type in 6 in wide x 9 in long. That is the size of a standard book, so it will give you an idea of how long your book will be.

But in kindle, you don’t use page numbers because people can enlarge the font, etc. But changing the size of the paper will tell you about how many “regular” book pages it will be – which is what is the estimated size in a kindle book sales page.

            • Tiffany says:

I like my standard LOL! I don’t go by page numbers anyway – just write what I need to write and I’m done :)

            • Lauri says:

Thanks for that! It helps with a visual. :) . Love the comment about the readers filling in the fluff and filler. OR, fluff and stuff, ha ha ha!
I am sure as I grow more confident, this won’t even be an issue. But as a newbie with zero rep, it seems a bit daunting, ya know? :) . Bring on my inner Honey Badger!

    • Hello,

I think the average is about 250 words for a Kindle page.

I’m in on the challenge, btw. It will be a real challenge for me but I really do need to get this out of my head, onto paper (all be it electronic!).

Been procrastinating for too long and not getting my stuff done, just other people’s.

      Thanks.

      Angel cuddles,

      Sarah

  • Sara says:

Glad I decided to read your email today – I’m totally into this challenge. Will work on my outline tonight. :)

  • I’m In! I got Kindling thru your link (last week?0 and I already had a book half done to put up (been thinking about this a LONG time) so I need total edit and FINISH it! This will be the butt kicking I need! Yee Haa!

  • Hello Tiffany …great idea especially for those ‘crastinators who are full of excuses.
Challenge is good as is change…so I’ll give it a go.Thanks for the link to the E Cover site!

  • Olive says:

Great idea Tiff – I’m in. Can feel the challenge already – think I need some chocolate!

  • Edie Dykeman says:

I’m in and have ideas for fiction and non that have been dormant for too many years. Eager to get started, finally!

  • Thanks Tiff for the kick up the derriere, I am in and will follow Geoff’s suggested summary books. As it is Sunday here in the UK I’d better get going

    Have a lovely day

    Charles

  • Alex says:

I’m not ready to do my next kindle book AND I don’t work on Sundays AND I’m sure I can think up more reasons but damnit Tiffany I’m in!

BTW Lauri asks about page size I guess peeps could do a number of words a day but let’s keep it simple and go for a page in MS Word.

    AND Thank You Tiff!

    :-)

  • Steve says:

    I’m in!
I have Geoff’s course and have been working through it while following your review.
I am the ‘procraster master’(?) and really needed something like this to get focused.
I’m off to the park with my family and then I’ll have the rest of the day to get some ideas together for my 1st summary book.

  • Britt Malka says:

I love a good challenge! I’m in! One page per day? Easy peasy…

“BEFORE she does stuff for other people.”

BEFORE I do stuff for other people (including my own other stuff that needs to be done): SCARY!

Upping the challenge… one page of FICTION per day? HYPER-SCARY!

    I’m in :D

  • Sydney says:

Tiff, I joined your FB page even though I’m not a beginner. I have 2 books on Kindle and just added them to CreateSpace. But I really love your 1 page/day, FIRST, idea. That’s definitely a challenge worth accepting.

  • Barb Johnson says:

This is wonderful! This is what I need. I love a challenge and I’m in.

Thank you so much Tiff. “Never know what you can do till you try.”

  • Annie says:

I’m definitely in Tiff–wasted last week playing with cover graphics which led to infographics which led to….

yep I am a bit of a flutterby–want to do everything. Had another new idea for today and need the book out by September so shall try to do a page per day finishing the first idea and another page per day on this one.

Loved Book One of your series and really looking forward to Book Two. Thanks for everything and thanks to your Mom too for that pic…great giggle and of course she’s right.

  • catherine says:

i am in . I have started Geoff’s course but more
importantly I have seen into a few people’s accounts and Kindle has got to be mastered. I am starting today

  • Joyce Heiser says:

I’m in! This procrastinator is on board…

    Thanks for the make-it-easy plan.

  • Kim says:

#1 procrastinator here and reporting for duty….Kim

  • Eibhlin says:

I’m in. Definitely. I turned two of my Kindle books into print books last week, and I’m ready for my next Kindle.

I love this challenge because, after a server crash (and restoring a 400+ page website from what turned out to be a bad backup), I got sidetracked from Kindle writing.

This challenge is going to get me back on track. Whee! MUCH needed… thank you, thank you, Tiffany!

And, yes, Tiffany is right about the pages, Word v. Kindle:

A typical 8.5″ x 11″ page Word (or OpenOffice or LibreOffice) document, written at about 10 – 12 points, will usually become one-and-a-quarter pages in Kindle, depending illustrations and on font size — your own and the Kindle owner’s choice, both.

My content curation book, with one illustration, is 41 pages as an 8.5″ x 11″ document. It became a 48 page Kindle book.

    Published as a 6″ x 9″ printed book (on paper) using CreateSpace’s standard template, it’s 60 pages.

Illustrations — and how you size and paginate them for Kindle — can make a Kindle book larger than the approximately 1:1.25 ratio. At the current time, we’re generally making illustrations a centered element that stands alone, not an in-line element. And, you may scale your image up a bit for Kindle readers. So, if you have illustrations — or graphical breaks in your text (banners, horizontal bars, etc.) — that makes your Kindle book longer.

  • Mary Kathan says:

I am IN…..This will be a good way focus and stop running 100 miles per hour in circles.

  • Ruth P says:

I am definitely joining! I am already working on this, and my first book’s almost done, but this will help me work more consistently.

  • Tiff:

Ok, I have a question… Do you have tips on creating an outline for your subject?

Also, will you show us how to format the book for Kindle?

    Thanks,

    Roz

    • Tiffany says:

Yep I’ll go over it today. I like how Geoff explains summary books too if you decide to do that type. And yes we’ll do formatting later.

  • Buddy says:

    Tiff,
While I love the challenge, I outsource fiction. Tell you what, I just paid for another 10000 word story, does that count?

    Buddy

  • Hi Tiffany,

Thanks for the challenge. First read this post a few hours ago. Have a very rare day when my daughters are both out so I sat down and wrote the first chapter of my children’s book. Getting started is always the hardest bit but the image of a honey badger kept me going!Feel great now (and slightly smug.)Good luck to everyone who takes on the challenge – you can do it, just get started. Can’t wait to see everyone’s books.

  • Carol O. says:

    I’m in.

I have an outline done for a non fiction book–just need to do the writing. One page a day, first thing every day is very doable.

  • Gordon says:

I’m in, Tiffany! Although I write articles to make money, my real passion is fiction. Just started mapping out long short story or maybe novella, so will continue working on that. Can’t wait!

  • Tiff,

I’m in! I have an ebook finished and on Clickbank, but not on Kindle. I have a book on old fashioned Christmas almost finished so I will finish that up and start a new one a page a day.

  • Joan Adams says:

Count me in!!!!!!!!! I think I can do this one little step at a time!

  • Dee says:

    I am IN girl!

I have 6 book non-fiction book series planned that I know a lot about and think can be profitable.

Hope to have first one free or .99 with the others 2.99.. and then of course a bundle price for all.

I want to make sure I give good value to my readers. No fluff and solid info.. and have question about length.

    Question:
How many pages would you say I should shoot for per book?

    thanks, dee :)

    • Tiffany says:

Whatever length it takes to tell. I never worry about page count. Even if it’s 10 pages I’m good. If it takes 100 I’m good :)

      • Dee says:

I hear you about the 10 – 100.. but I think pp would feel cheated (I know I do) with a 10 page ebook no matter how good it is. I classify 10 pages as more of a report..

        Hmmm..

I could fill up 100+ pages on each book if necessary but was hoping to find nice balance for what readers expect and how much time/work needs to go into each book.

I guess I’ll shoot for 50-75 pages per book.

  • Mary says:

I’m in! I’m calling it the Kindle Klub. I’ll be on vacation for one week of the next 30 days, but I’ll either write on vacation or I’ll write like crazy when I get back.

  • Beverly says:

OK — I admit I was a bit “challenged” by the challenge last night, but now that I’ve had a chance to think about it, I’m excited.
This is the kind of stuff I’ve always wanted to write.
Tiffany is going to make a success of her mom yet!!! Love you, rae.

  • Sherrie says:

Great idea Tiffany! Count me in!

  • I’m in! I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, but keep getting sidetracked with other stuff.

  • I absolutely love your challenges. I got a lot of PLR articles written in the last 30 day challenge you had.

I am definitely in on this one.

Thank you and everyone have a lovely Sunday.

    Victoria. :)

  • Sydney says:

I’m in Tiff. This is what I needed. I’ve been reading your review (printed it out and put in a binder) along with Geoff’s course but have not written ONE word.

    I need to do this…as always…YOU ROCK!

  • Honey Wesley says:

I work full time for an Internet marketer and take occasional ghostwriting jobs on the side, and just like your Mom, I always make sure everybody else’s work is done before mine.

I do have one book on Kindle already, but clearly haven’t done enough promotion, since I’ve had no sales.

But I know they won’t all be winners, so I’ve already started on a second book, and would love to join you and all your “Tiffettes” in the one page a day challenge!

    Honey

P.S. Who else does what you do? Not only do you continue to come up with ways to motivate your audience, but I’m not aware of any other marketer that takes the time to make a response to every single comment that’s left on their blog! And as I write this there are 95 on this post!

That should be a book in your Entrepreneur series…how to *really* build a relationship…not “with your list” but “with the *people* on your list”.

  • Joanne Reid says:

I’m in!!! I am planning a series about letting go…so the first one is underway!

  • Gail Hess says:

    Hi Tiff,

As you know I travel quite often and your challenges always seem to come about a week before I am leaving on vacation for 2 or 3 weeks. I always use this as an excuse when I don’t finish the challenge! Well this time we just got back from vacay and I have no excuse, so I am in for it the next 8 weeks (before we leave again). By then I should be on a roll with Kindle.

I got Geoff’s course just before I left and and spent the last two days since I got back from vacation reading through it. Yep – procrastinating by reading everything before doing :)

Now I need to do an outline – but wait – first I need an idea. That shows you how much of a beginner I am. Going through the entire course and still do not have one “perfect” idea. Many, many going on in my head, but haven’t honed in to the perfect one yet. Hmm -more procrastinating?

But I am in and had already planned to spend the day on Kindle, so choosing my subject and doing the outline is great.

    Thanks,
    Gail

  • Raymond says:

Hi Tiff. – Okay, okay already. You’ve twisted my arm. I’m in! I just purchased Kindling and I’m waiting on my login information. Thanks for the K.I.T.A. – Ray

  • Yoan says:

The “compounding effect” goes a long way! One page a day doesn’t seem much and then after 50 days… big reward! I agree with how you see things! Perfect!

  • Stan says:

Thanks Tiff. I’m in. No more couch potato.

  • Hi Tiff,

I’m in. I already did my summary book, but want to do a 3 book series. So, I’ll do the second in the series.

Fun to do it together! And we can all learn. I like the idea of looking at each others work.

    Debbie

  • Janet says:

As always this is very timely for me. I started Geoff’s course this morning (French time) and started to do some brainstorming for a series of booklets I want to write, and then this evening I read your post on facebook about the challenge. I am definitely in and hope that I might even get more than a page a day done, but I will stick with your page a day challenge for the time being and see how I get on.

  • Cyril Almond says:

Count me in Tiffany, but my grammar lets me down

  • Jan says:

Ok I’ve had a book half written for too long so this means I’m going to finish it at least at the rate of a page a day. I’m in!

    Thanks for the challenge

    Jan

  • Sandy says:

Due to a personal hiccup – can’t buy “Kindling” but what the hell, I am in anyway. Going the non-fiction route of course. Have already created the outline of what I plan to do. Now of course I need to actually do it :)

  • Scott says:

    Owwwww…stop it already…

You made me buy Kindling (kind of appropriate I grew up using kindling to start fires), now your making me implement the training…how the heck am I going to wallow in my personal pity party? If you keep motivating?…Karma Girl…

    Ok, seriously…Good Job again…

  • Linda says:

Oh my — I’m absolutely in! Just opened my email this a.m. (Sunday) read your challenge, and since I’ve already started writing, and got sidetracked, I’m taking the kick in the butt that I needed. Thanks and see you at the finish line. My subject is on home-based business. I’ll finish the outline today.
Ohhh I’m so thankful for you! hugs

  • Carolyn says:

Had a busy weekend and just now opened your email. This challenge comes at the right time for me as I recently got Kindling and wanted to get going, but like so many others my priorities are always to get other work finished first. Thanks for the virtual butt kicking!

  • James Brown says:

    Hi Tiff,

Had to think this one over. As I mentioned before I don’t have the work ethic that you do. I’m working on finishing up my novella for Kindle and I had to decide if I had it in me to give up tv for a month.
After mulling it over I decided yes, I am in. I’ll do my page a day first thing in the morning, copywriting biz for the rest of the day and between 7pm and midnight…bang on the keyboard with the fiction.
I have some Kindle topics written out, now I have to choose which one would be the best to cash in on.

We got the Texas heat going here, hovering around 40 with the humidity included…alas Sept where are you?

    I am in!
Thanks for the challenge.. Just what I need!
Joining a bit late but that’s OK.
    Thanks for everything Tiff.
    Mary

  • Tiff, I will try. I haven’t finished 52 Squidoo, yet. Thanks
