Branding Obstacles

Hi everyone! Honey Badger Tiff here! Hope y’all are having a very safe and lovely Labor Day weekend. I had to haul my fat butt up to CareNow this morning (LOVE that place cuz the waiting room is your living room when you use web check in) and it turns out I have a viral bronchial infection. I firmly believe it was all that vein popping yelling I did that let a little germ fly in when my mouth was open. LOL!

So today as I’m mapping out a bit of our upcoming branding challenge, I want to share with you a few obstacles I blurted out onto paper and see if you can add to or comment on this list. I need to know what others are concerned about when it comes to branding.

Here’s my short list of things that may be obstacles for people with branding:

1. Not knowing what your brand should even be. We all need direction on what we should be propping ourselves up as in the marketplace. Some of you may already know! When I was ghostwriter to the gurus, I knew immediately. Now, notsomuch.  I will be brainstorming this from scratch right alongside you guys.

2. Trying to be the brand of choice for everyone in that niche. This is a big mistake people make – trying to be everything for everyone.

This morning a long time follower said he was disappointed in my rant. Wanted me to rethink it. No. I’m me. You be you. If I’m not right for you, and you feel you have to move along, that’s okay. Your brand can’t make everyone happy.

Some people will need to follow your competitors’ brands – and they should! My brand is a little bit bitch (to those who deserve it). I’m blunt. If you turn your nose up to that, then find a sweetheart marketer to tune into.

You have to be willing to stand firm and not cave to pressure. If you say you’re the best green living instructor on the ‘net and someone calls you out and says your ideas are not smart, are you going to agree with them and cower behind your screen or show people you believe in yourself as much as they should and put up your dukes (figuratively speaking of course)?

And let me tell you ONE thing. The bigger you get, the more nameless, faceless people are going to try to knock you down. Trolls are abundant on the Internet. They love to argue because they’re not face to face. They will make some of the most ridiculous arguments you’ve ever seen and you’ll be wondering, “Are they SERIOUS?” Recognize there are QUITE a few idiots in this world – and they’ll be attracted to you because they don’t have the ability to go out and lead people themselves. It’s envy – that’s all.

3. Being afraid to brand. This is a biggie – and we usually laugh about video or fat pictures, but really, even if those two concepts weren’t involved, some people are going to be nervous branding themselves. It’s a confidence issue. You worry about “what if you AREN’T really the best in this niche?” Oh well, don’t worry about it – to some people, you WILL be the next best thing since sliced bread.

And branding is going to require you to share. You ready to share your story? Your experience? Your desire to help others who need your solutions? If you can’t get personal and become a relationship marketer, then you might ought to head to the latest GRQ wso and pick up a “let’s game google while we can” guide.

The reason your brand will take off is because you’re willing to be real with people. We see it time and time again here in the comments section – people thanking the hell out of me – not for any specific strategy, but for “being real.” It creates loyalty and trust, which directly converts into sales. It’s probably WHY gurus have told me my smaller 9k list converted at HUGE numbers above big time marketers with 100k lists – they don’t always have the same relationship with their subscribers.

4. Worrying that you’ll make the wrong branding decision and have to redo it later. Now is that so bad? Really, let’s think about it. We do a lot of work to build a brand (ghostwriter to the gurus) and later realize it isn’t working for us anymore. So what?

Consider it exciting – something new to pursue! Don’t be a Nelly about it. Embrace the change. I may flub my whole branding here in this challenge, but if I figure it out later, I’m just going to be happy I had a placeholder and happy that I did finally find my perfect brand later.

Now I do want to caution you about consistency. We don’t want to be changing up our brand every 30 days. Find your footing and if you realize you’re changing your mind too often, then you need to take a step back and really dig in deep to make a final decision.

5. Putting too much focus on that dirty USP. I dislike that USP (Unique Selling Proposition) term. It’s all about setting yourself apart to make a sale. But let’s build a real big, thriving business this time – don’t come to the table with “selling” in mind! Come to the table with SERVING in mind. So maybe we can keep the USP but turn it into Unique SERVING Proposition.

This, by the way, is opposite of most branding advice I’ve seen in recent years. Normally it’s all about selling. What a selfish way to build a business.

6. Not knowing how to brand. Do you just stick a header image up and make sure your site tags are in line with your brand? Of course not. You have to brand everywhere – we’re going to be slinging our brand all over the ‘net. We’ll be using almost all free methods (but of course a blog/domain will be needed and perhaps an email autoresponder, but there are free options for all of those if you’re flat broke)!

There will be optional things we can do – like if you want a logo created, go for it. But I’m going to try to keep this geared for newbie/shoestring budget marketers, not those who have dough to toss around and test things out without a second thought.

Now it’s your turn – first, what do you think of the above obstacles? And second, what others worry you?

Okay time for me to go heal myself. Any of you using a voodoo doll on me, I cry Uncle! No more colds, please :) LOL!

Tiff :)

  • Viral bronchitis infections – not good! Heal yourself today, okay?

About branding, I think one of the biggest issues is setting yourself apart from the thundering herd. There’s a bazillion and one individuals in all spaces…but there’s only one *unique* you!

Have the confidence to embrace that and stand tall regarding that.

Another way to brand yourself is to take a look at the said bazillions in your niche and then ask yourself – what can you offer on your site that nobody else is doing? One answer, of course, is your personality – your take on humor, daily events, Redwall badgers and the like. Another answer is to make visiting your site that someone simply….anticipates. It delivers value and makes people feel *good*.

    That’s a tremendous component to a brand!

Failing that, of course, talking about coffee always helps…. :)

  • Joanne Reid says:

I branded myself recently. In spite of all my efforts, I revel in chaos. All my life I have tried to impose order on the world I have been a writer and a geek but underneath it all, I have been the Chaos Queen. So I got a sketch done of me. It actually does not look like me (as I think of myself) but OMG it looks like my Nana. As she was when I was a kid. She passed in 1976. It was like a message from the universe when the sketch artist brought forth my grandmother!

I did a Chaos Queen thing last week. Here is a pic of my new “brand”

    • Tiffany says:

      that’s awesome Joanne!

    • Maureen says:

      Hi Joanne,

YEAH!!!!!!!!!! there are 2 of us that are not clean freaks, I can’t believe it a true friend indeed and we’ve never met.

That could have been me in that picture although I would have looked different but the mess would have been the same or worse. I also have beat myself up for years for being a mess freak but love me or leave me and when I die chuck the mess out if you don’t want it, it’s so great to meet a kindred soul.

Here’s to mess, as opposed to filth, and those of us who are happy in it, have a great day.

The joke of all this is I’m a Residential cleaner whose clients tell me their homes have never been cleaner than since I started doing them. Go figure that one.

What a great start to my “working” day and y’all have a great day.

      • Joanne Reid says:

        Hi Maureen!

Ah yes, we are like the shoeless children of shoemakers…

Oh clutter and chaos I have seen and slept with. And for some reason (I think the universe is telling me something) I have had 3 occasions recently to deal with the belongings of recently beloved departed — family members of friends — and I volunteered to declutter and as I did, I kept thinking that I would never want my family to see the detritus of my life like that. It is sad for one thing to see the little mementos that people keep and scary sometimes.

One poor lady loved crafting but there was not one finished project amongst her stuff. And she had enough material to fill three pickup trucks.

And yet I still prefer to read than clean out drawers.

        • Kathy says:

Another kindred soul. Within my own desk (or house) with piles of papers everywhere, ask me to find just one particular piece. I can give it to you in seconds. But when I tidy up and put everything away? Can’t find a thing. Those completely ‘clean and tidy’ houses seem soulless. Only people in magazines live that way!

Give me a book or a piano and I’m lost for hours.

    • Sarah says:

Oh wow Joanne I love it! Now you have so stolen my possible brand..my office looks just like your pic!
      Sarah

  • What a beautiful picture and a great quote. Thanks for sharing.

With regards to Branding and Confidence, this is quite interesting. I am not a shy person at all, in person, but online I have always felt a little bit hesitant. But as I mentioned yesterday, I am slowly stepping out of the shadows, by adding a picture on the site and also my name. For some this isn’t a biggie but for me – wowza.

Looking forward to the challenges that await us.

    Tiptopcat (aka Victoria) :)

PS – Will you be producing some kind of logo for this challenge – I liked the idea that a commmenter referenced yesterday – A pig being branded LoL.

  • Cindi says:

    Hi Tiffany,

Excellent outline for the branding. You’re already helping me understand it better now than before I read your post.

I do believe serving your customer is where it’s at. You serve your customer, and the money will follow. I learned that lesson back in the early 1980′s when I had my little brick & mortar shop. I was tired of the way I was treated when I walked into similar spaces, so I decided to start a store of my own, and treat my customers the way I wanted to be treated. What a novel idea!

I found a space that was lacking and I capitalized on it. Word of mouth spread like wild fire, and before you knew it, I was on top. It’s definitely all about service, and you never disappoint in that department, Tiffany!

I can’t think of anything to add at this point, but if I do, I will let you know.

    Take care!

    Cindi

  • Fran Civile says:

Hi Tiffany, I’m sorry about your bronchitis, take care of yourself.

I’ve been thinking about branding lately … I thought it was a good idea a couple of years ago to focus on the boomer retirement wave coming up
and finding a need to supplement their depleted finances! Lately I’ve been thinking that the “work from home” advice and products can have a more general appeal.

You,of course have your ‘ghostwriter to the gurus’ brand but combined that I agree with Barbara Ling ” One answer, of course, is your personality – your take on humor, daily events, Redwall badgers and the like. Another answer is to make visiting your site someone simply….
anticipates. It delivers value and makes people
    feel *good*.”

You have all that in spades, but along with all that, I and others keep on coming back for your constant flow of ideas and products we trust partly I think because you have open discussions about them!

    Fran

  • Sam says:

    Hi Tiffany:
Hope you get to feeling better soon. This is a great post on Branding. Just being yourself is so important and sticking to it.

  • Sue says:

Hope you are feeling better soon!

I think knowing how to brand yourself is the biggest issue along with knowing how to make your site different to all the others out there.

I have found lately that more and more of my customers are replying to my emails and leaving comments on my work. So that is a positive sign.

BTW my list just hit over 100 and I am thrilled!

  • Helena says:

    Great list Tiff!

I love your take on the USP. I’ve never liked it either because I have a hard time selling someone on something before I even get to know them. I like service much better. :)

I’m shy online and off, and a pretty private person to boot. So this branding challenge is going to be an adventure for me because I want to do it and do it well.

    Hope you feel better soon,
    Lena

  • Edie says:

After talking to someone not too long ago about my business model (or lack thereof), I realized I’m probably involved in too many areas online. Thinking about what my brand should be is reinforcing that discussion. Ouch!

    • Tiffany says:

      You’ll set it straight Edie!

    • Joanne Reid says:

I can totally relate — I am scattered all over the ‘net even if I have no visitors. (It might be my fear of commitment!)

This just makes me think about branding and sticking to one persona. I am the Chaos Queen and have had my chaos site for years — my son runs a hosting company and he’s been supportive since day one and has been giving me this hosting since the last century. And what have I done with it?

Nothing! I have 36 subscribers and I neglect them. No more neglect.

  • Debra Conrad says:

    7. Consistency… Stick with your brand and don’t deviate in the same space.

Don’t brainstorm your brand and then dilute it.

    8. Persistent… One of the biggest failings I’ve seen from some of the most talented people… they don’t “stick with it”.

You must make this “branding” top of the list priority and “work it” every day! Three blog posts and a twitter account with your branding will NOT cut it. :)

    • Tiffany says:

      good ones Debra!

    • Joanne Reid says:

Words to heed!! I have been following you and your public domain branding and see how you are the public domain diva for sure.

I wonder why I kept haring off in all directions online when I began my chaos queen habits before I started Grade 1 and knew then what I wanted to do and be.

Maybe I was afraid to let people know just how chaotic my life is (was).

  • Cynthea Kinnaman says:

Branding is HUGE when it comes to building and growing your biz. I’m in alignment w/ ya’ Tiff on your short list of obstacles when it comes to building your brand.

However–I’m thinking the #1 obstacle to branding is Not recognizing the value of branding (aka Being Too Stupid to Brand). Now you might say that my #1 is very similar to your #1. Might be true, but if you think about it — someone might be smart enough to recognize the value of branding, but they might be where many folks are at, which is the stage of being unsure what your brand is.

You’re so hysterical – I loved your “I used to be indecisive… now I’m not sure” comic book gif.

Thank you once again for giggles and food for though. Take care of yourself! Get well!

    Cynthea

P.S. Can you say more about what the next Challenge is? I’m scratchin’ my head, a bit confused, and would love some clarification after the holiday weekend.

  • Alice Coaxum says:

Hope you feel better Tiffany. I am working at Branding myself but it really is a work in progress as I still have decisions to make. You have a pretty good list of obstacles there. I’m really shy and a fear of branding or really putting myself out there had in the past kept me from doing things I knew I should be doing and now I’m doing things that I could have been doing all along.

At one point I would never leave a comment on a blog like yours because I felt that I’m not known enough to do that and who would care about what I have to say? But now I know that I don’t have to be at guru status to interact with a well known successful marketer.

  • Hi Tiff,

    Personal branding is a challenge.

On one of my websites I have a free report on 10 White Hot Tips for a Great Personal Brand if anyone wants it or if it will help anyone here.

I also have an eBook on the subject but won’t promote it here.

But, anyone who wants the free report can sign up for it at http://1-800-ShowMeHow.com.

I’m looking forward to everyone’s input regarding branding because it is a big topic with many different views.

  • Unique Serving Proposition IS unique…I love that idea over Selling. Thank you! Way to go.

    Feel Better Soon, I hope!

  • Adrian says:

    Hi Tiff,

It’s my understanding that any branding here would have to be about the individual as the individual would not change where as a business model might. As an example right now you are Tiffany Dow (ghostwriter, product reviewer, PLR queen, etc)and 99% of the people here understand that brand as somebody who is honest, helps, admits they don’t know it all and shares the ups and downs and pros and cons.

If something happened that meant 12 months from now your only way of earning was through Amazon. We have no doubt you’ll rock it but the brand would still be Tiffany Dow, (Amazon Queen),somebody who is honest, helps, admits they don’t know it all and shares the ups and downs and pros and cons.

If you brand a business and that business has to change the branding could be invalid. Therefore branding should only be about the person.

Which leads me onto branding of an online identity. I noticed one marketer selling a very good product under one name but when they logged into their account within a video the account was in a different name. I did some googling and photos for both these names tend to be the same face.

Is this a good way to go or even ethical. Does it indicate something to hide?

Sure some people might be tempted to brand an alternate identity because if it all falls flat then their real selves escape intact.

Am I making sense or just waffling?

    • Tiffany says:

Not necessarily. You’ll be able to brand your name OR a business. IE: I don’t want Tiffany Dow synonymous with ghostwriting since I don’t really do that anymore (except this one case study report). I also think I want to brand the PLR Mini Mart on its own. I won’t be hiding anything but I might have my main Tiffany Dow – marketing teacher brand and then an individual brand for my Mini Mart. There are many reasons why people use pen names. I don’t mind that if there’s a face to the name. I know for example, one of our friends here has an ex stalking her so she has to go by a pen name.

  • Adwello says:

My biggest obstacle is not how to brand but why. I feel I need to have a sales funnel firmly in place: free give away literature, low price ebooks or audio series, upsells and a continuity program in place before I begin branding.

I ask myself why I am building a brand: what do i want to offer my prospects? How do i stand out from the pack? Will this still interest me a year from now? Do I have an exit strategy in place?

Point is, all this marketing is time intensive and hard work – without the why, the how becomes negligible.

  • Kater says:

#5 Putting too much focus on that dirty USP.

I love the concept of USP because it causes you to focus on what your promise is to the marketplace. That said, I really like the tweak you made to call it Unique Serving Proposition vs Unique Selling Proposition. Phrasing it that way helps build your brand to serve not sell.

Don’t do this step and you’ll bomb at standing out from the crowd.

#3. Being afraid to brand. I’m not sure this is fear. It may be someone doesn’t understand the benefits of branding. Or they think that branding is for big companies. Or maybe they haven’t worked through #5 yet. You have to define what makes your brand special otherwise there is nothing to brand.

This is a tough task. A lot tougher than tossing up a website in hopes of selling something. But branding is an incredibly powerful tool for creating a business that is profitable.

Not everyone is up to that challenge. It’s not a weakness. It’s just not in their nature to go through the process so that they really build a business.

    Kater

  • Matthew says:

Well Tiff, love your issue today and it’s one ya gotta do if you are serious about staying and growing on the web. And like you say – if you make a branding mistake and have to redo it later, is that so bad? Jus’ think about it, pardner, Cowboys done it all the time!

In fact I subscribe to the “Rawhide” philosophy: “Don’t try to understand ‘em, just rope, tie, and brand ‘em!”

  • Mark Upshaw says:

I couldn’t agree more with number 5. Ditch the selling in USP and make it Service. Smart people want service and tend to be more loyal. Those wanting to be sold, tend to have little loyalty. Apart from them, doesn’t it feel better when we deliver great service/content that makes sells rather than simply selling and everyone is “just another sale?”

  • Joe Mudd says:

I’ve helped several local people take their offline business to the Internet. They have the same problem that so many online marketers have.

They forget that for a small business, YOU are the business. YOU are the brand.

Most of these people, who have no problem meeting potential customers in a face-to-face setting, are terrified of putting their face on a website.

I’ve been working on a new project. As part of that I’ve been going to ALL the sites you list on your PLR Sources page. There are so many on the list with not only no picture of themselves, but they don’t even have a name on there.

Calling yourself the PLR Babe or the PLR Dude might be cute, and even OK, but we all know that’s not your name. We want to know who we’re doing business with.

I was having a hard time getting a picture for one of my local guys websites. He understood why we need to have it there, but he didn’t really want to put one on there. This is a guy that will talk your head off in person, and will talk to anyone. But he was nervous about putting his picture online.

It just so happened I had a picture of him acting sort of silly, with a mop on his head for a wig, and wearing a hardhat. I put that picture on the website. He got me a new one real fast.

If you won’t trust me enough to tell me who you are, how am I supposed to trust you with my hard earned cash?

This is in real danger of turning into a rant, and this is Tiffany’s place to rant. I may have to do a rant somewhere else.

Hope you feel better soon Tiffany.

  • Sally K says:

    Hello Tiffany,

Hope you’re getting better. Turn honey badger loose on that virus! (Deadly snake bite… HB sleeps it off like a bad hangover. Gets up to hunt again!)

Branding challenge, looks like your six and the others here in comments will be plenty of scope. It helps to review your “why”, purpose and goals. Continual course corrections.

    Thanks!

  • Hello Tiff et al,

Firstly, I will send you some healing energy for your bronchial infection, if you are willing to accept it.

Secondly, branding…… This is difficult for me. As I have said before, I am very shy. I put the video on my ghostwriting site, but I was being extremely brave when I did that. I find it difficult to toot my own horn and have to battle with the shutters that start coming down with full force!

I love the expression ” Unique Serving Proposition.” I love to serve. (I have had people take advantage of me in the past due to that, but I am willing to take the chance).

My angel cuddles are part of my service. I guess I have started to brand myself (without knowing) by sharing those cuddles. I get messages from people who say “Hello, Angel Cuddles” and they are messages on serious topics. I actually called my business Angel Cuddle Publishing. But then doubt keeps creeping in. Will people take me seriously with that name? My husband thinks not. When he saw my business name he had nothing good to say about it at all. If my life partner thinks that way, are other people going to take me seriously or are they going to be turned away?

I will keep that business name because I have the mission to share angel cuddles in this world, but should I find some other way of branding too? This is my obstacle. Actually, helping people with my writing, is a form of angel cuddles. I know that. But are other people going to think that I’m some weirdo and not take me seriously?

I have been thinking about this ever since you started talking about the challenge. It has been going round and round in my little head!

Oh dear, I had better be quiet now. Been going on for too long, sorry.

    Angel cuddles,

    Sarah

    • Tiffany says:

I sure will Sarah I was up at 4 am horribly sick and woke up bawling at 10 am so my hubby put me in a hot bubble bath and gave me excedrin migraine. it’s a bad day :(

Re: Angel Cuddles. You know I say be true to you. Do you want to work for someone who’s going to be offended at Angel Cuddles? Or are those people not your target audience. I know for me personally, it’s always comforting to see that phrase when you email or comment here. I don’t know why. I like it.

    • Gaynor says:

      Hi Sarah,
Just to say I love your site and can see your work is excellent.

You are very brave to do a video as I fear doing this!

Angel Cuddles is a fantastic name and will as Tiff says appeal to the people you most want. Go with your gut feeling.

    Hi Tiff,
Sorry to hear you are under the weather. Please take the time to rest up. Here is a link you might find useful.

    be well,
    Jack

    • Tiffany says:

thank you Jack! I’m doing most of those. It’s been a bad day waking up crying I’m so sick. But my son made my coffee, hubby drew me a nice bubble bath, and my little girl gave me a lovely back rub. Precious family dried my tears up.

  • Gaynor says:

What are you doing working at 4am when you should be resting!!LOL

    Hope you feel better soon.

I find all the comments so helpful as this subject does confuse me some. Anyway, will stick with you and keep my fingers and toes crossed!

    • Tiffany says:

Well my time might be off on my blog. LOL! I’m Texas (central) time zone – go to bed at 9 PM (latest 10) on my nights and wake up between 6-8 most days. lol

  • Debi J says:

    Tiff,

I’ve been looking at what to do in the way of branding since you mentioned it was going to be the next challenge. I have a list of attributes that’s growing daily.

My concern? Will I be able to narrow down the possibilities to less than 500 words!? :)

I’ve never been an expert at any one thing that outshines everything else. I’m the picture in the dictionary next to “Jack of all trades, master of none”….and I like it that way (until I work on branding). LOL Working on a single project non-stop will bore me before I ever it get it done. How in the world am I going to narrow myself down to “A” brand!?

It will be interesting to see what develops ou of this project!
