Creating Your Own Website
Note from Tiff: As you all know, there are some thing I never claim to be an expert in. Website development is one of them. I invited my special guest, Elizabeth, to deliver some tips on how to create your own website. Her information is rock solid, and I’m glad to have her helping me inform you.
Elizabeth McGee is a full time Internet marketer with over 8 years experience in internet marketing and online business. Visit her Internet Home Business & Marketing Tips blog where you’ll find plenty of Tips, Advice and Personal Support.
Here’s what Elizabeth had to say:
Congratulations! You’ve decided to take action and create your own website. Now that you’ve made the commitment, you’re probably anxious to get started but despite your excitement you may be unsure of what to do next.
Not to worry, the following site building methods will allow you to create a website that will not only meet your business needs and attract traffic but when you are finished you will have built a website that is both user and search engine friendly.
Research Your Keywords
A successful, focused website starts with finding the best keywords. That means finding relevant, targeted keywords for each page of your web site.
In fact I suggest that even before purchasing your domain name you first determine the keywords that best describe your site’s overall topic. I’ve found that doing my keyword research first helps a lot with finding a domain name that more accurately describes what my site is about
There are several free keyword research tools to help you out. Google’s keyword research is a good start. Look for keywords that best describes each page of your site yet are the keywords most used by web surfers to find that specific information.
Choose your domain name
It helps to have a domain name that contains your main keywords. A puppy training site for example would do well to have ‘puppy training’ in the domain name. Something like bestpuppytraining.com or puppytrainingsite.com would be ideal. You’re not likely to find your perfect domain name on the first try but keep looking and you can come close.
Site Structure
Your site’s structure will help you develop a site that flows logically, is easy for visitors to navigate and the search engines will love. Here’s the most common website structure:
· a left column that includes a site categories menu
· a right column that features miscellaneous content or advertising
· a main panel in the middle for the body copy
· a header panel that often includes an attractive graphic
· a page footer that could include graphics and contains basic items like site map, terms of use, about me, etc.
Use your keyword research tools to help you determine what categories your site will offer. For example, while researching ‘Dutch oven cooking’ I was able to turn up things like:
· Dutch oven recipes
· Dutch oven products & accessories
· Dutch oven cookbooks
· Dutch oven care
These are all categories that people interested in Dutch oven cooking would find useful.
Web Site Navigation
Your site’s navigation is critical to helping you rank well in the search engines. Create sub directories for your pages and file them where they make the most sense. For example, if you have several pages for ‘Dutch oven recipes’ file them in a subcategory for recipes:
/recipes/nacho-dip.html
/recipes/chili.html
/recipes/chicken-tenders.html
It’s also good practice to also keep your content limited to 3 levels deep. That means developing a structure that takes no more than 3 links to get to the deepest content. The shorter the path a search engine has to take to get to an internal page the better.
Create Quality Content
Your site’s content should be unique, original and updated often. The best way to do this is to write your content yourself or have it written for you. Of course not everyone’s a writer so finding ways to give your readers what they are looking for and keep them coming back means you’ll have to get creative.
· Consider having articles written for you. Ghostwriters aren’t hard to find and their prices are reasonable.
· Try using Private label rights content or PLR and customizing it with your own ideas and thoughts.
· Exchange articles with other related websites or conduct an interview with someone knowledgeable on your topic.
· Try creating a fun video or pod cast.
These are all excellent, creative yet fun ideas for developing content.
Whatever you choose to do keep it interesting, mix it up and always stay focused on your readers, avoiding sales pitches and product pushes.
Follow Basic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Strategies
Each page of your website must have the best keyword phrase in the title and description tags for that page. Your keyword phrase should also be part of your page’s header and header tag (h1) as well as in your image tag (img) if you have one.
Also include the same keyword phrase once or twice within the body of the page and it should be part of your page’s file name, so for example, a page about ‘Dutch Oven Recipes’ should contain a the file name of ‘dutch oven recipes’:
http://www.yoursite.com/dutch-oven-recipes.html
Be especially careful that the tags you use are relevant and accurately describe what each page is about.
and finally…
These strategies can be a lot to remember and sometimes tricky to implement so I suggest finding a site builder that has the above elements built directly into it.
For example I use Xsitepro for that very reason. My sites have been able to naturally rank high within the search engines just by following the instructions within the site builder. It makes building a site that navigates well and that the search engines love much, much easier.
But regardless of what software you use be sure you take time to do your initial research and planning, it will make the process from beginning to end flow a lot smoother while saving you from potential problems down the road.
Tiff Again: Much thanks to Elizabeth for visiting my blog and sharing her website creation tips. I’ll admit this is one of the most daunting tasks a marketer with no technical skills has to undertake, but with the right guidance, it can all go smoothly for you.

WOW…Great post and fantastic information!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience
and expertise on this subject.
P.S.: I have used XSitePro for a few years.
Yes, it does get the performance people need from a website…and IS EASY to learn to use!
Hi Tiff,
Nice information you’ve provided here that points all webmasters to a sure-fire way to building killer websites.
I personally consider XsitePro one of the best website builders ever – besides the Wordpress blogging platform, that is.
When newbies come and ask me which one to get, I’ll tell them to get both. Who says it has to be a “either, or” scenario when it can be a “both, this and that” situation.
Best regards,
Dr. John Chen
Hi Tiff and Elizabeth!
Great information!
Most of my posts usually have the post number, not the title of the article. Can I change those without it messing up anything within my site?
You have provided some excellent tips that I truly appreciate! I’ll also be checking my sub categories to fit your instructions, great ideal!
As a writer, I know how important it is to incorporate SEO into articles and there are so many people that don’t understand how important that is to their success.
Thanks again for the great information!
Deb
I second the recommendation for XSitePro. In fact, I just upgraded to 2.0 and it’s out of this world fantastic!
If you’re new to creating websites, XsitePro is the way to go. There’s a short learning curve, but is relatively easy to learn.
Excellent article. Right now I am undergoing the task of revamping my 4 year old website since I have learned a lot about SEO this past year. Reading your article confirms that I am on the right path and I was also able to gain a few valuable tips. Thank you for sharing!
This is a fabulous post, thanks Elizabeth. Many people do not know the importance of structuring a website with SEO in mind, let alone how to even begin to make a website.
I agree with Dax L ‘Amour and Elizabeth, I love xSitePro. It has an extensive set of tutorials for newbies and wonderful customer support.
Hi Tiffany, How timely! I am just about to start setting up my first website. I will reread chapter 5 of BAEE and go to Xsitepro. Thanks.
Thank you for all that info but I prefer to just stick to my blog. I’ve no doubt though that there will be many budding site builders out there that will value this information.

Elizabeth, I wish I had had such a clear and succinct path to creating a website when I first started.
I use XsitePro for all my websites and often attach a blog to them. The best website creation software around!
Nice outline for business, I used to use XsitePro got it when they first started back when they had tutorials, paid to upgrade to rev 2 then noticed no tutorials, then they wanted $200 to show how to build a website don’t need sneaky people in my life wordpress is better anyway.
Hi,Tiffany,
I would like to save the readers from misleading.Good web designer can create profitable online business and use own skills in web design. An average Joe trying to start online business can waste the entire life trying to become a web designer in spare time.
If you are not educated for web design, you can use Xsitepro, Dreamviewer,Visual Studio 6.0. FrontPage, etc, but your website will look ugly and non-professional.This is why the shoes should be made by a shoe maker, cakes should be baked buy a baker, website should be made by web designer, if you want to become a professional earner online. If you are doing this as a hobby, use NVU or something similar and make with your site everything you want. Nobody cares, right? But if you want to make it as a money earning machine, let this job to be done by professional who know what to do and how to do.If you go into the open sea without special education how to use sail during the stormy weather, you have a lot of odds to sink.Everybody who believes he/she is smart enough to do everything by themselves are making very big mistakes. It will cost them a lot of time and non-earned money.
Tiffany, great idea to use two hands inviting to type in your name and email address for updates! It’s awesome!
I already wanted to leave your blog, but these 2 hands didn’t let me to do it without subscribing.LOL
It definitely improves the entire performance of your blog, right?
I like to build a few ‘real’ websites because there is a niggly feeling I have that at some stage the big G will start slapping wordpress sites down. I love wordpress, it’s so simple to use, but that could end up being an issue. It is a spammers dream. A decent 10 page site can go up in a couple of hours, a thin 1 pager in a matter of minutes. At some stage I think google will start thinning wp sites out. (I have also started to remove as much of the WP footprint as I can just to be on the safe side.)
Great post Tinnany!
Xsite pro is definetley an investment worth making. It has helped me streamline the creation of hundreds of static sites.

Great post! For help on finding the right keywords, use online keyword tools like Wordtracker and the Google Keyword tool. These help find words that are highly searched and have low competition. Remember to not think of descriptive words as keywords but think about words people will use to search for your products and services. [link removed]
Hope this helps!
Very good points spotted here indeed!
I ussually check many times over my website’s keywords and omptimize it according to every news i discover on the internet.
I use iSpionage [link edited out] for being updated daily.
This article should remind everyone in the E-commerce business that it is vital to keep your contents keyword-rich and updated.
Nice post!!
Thanks for this tutorial. Maybe, I’ll get brave and go for it.
Awesome, Tiffany! i think this information can really help everyone who wants to start own buisiness.
Also i can advise a good tool for keyword research – SEMrush, it is good for me and imho suitable to everyone. And rather cheap by the way
