Dabbling in Internet Marketing With No Primary Focus

Hi everyone! I received a great email yesterday that was about a common problem. Here’s the situation I was asked about:

I seem to have contracted website marketing overload and am doing many things poorly instead of a few things with excellence because I fear letting go of any of my eggs in my basket. Any suggestions?  I am currently a freelance writer, dabbling in my own blogs and websites wanting to do more with niche sites, affiliate marketing and PLR. :( How do I narrow it down to the quality work with high return?

I can see you nodding your head thinking, “Yeah I know that feeling.” Either you’ve been there done that or you’re there NOW and need an answer to the same question. So let’s break down what she has on her plate:

  • Ghostwriting
  • Niche Websites
  • Affiliate Marketing
  • PLR

You have three choices here. You have to make the decision about which one you prefer.

Trimming Your Plate

If you just don’t have enough hours in the day, then you have to pick and choose – trim the fat. Maybe ghostwriting is putting food on the table, so that’s a keeper.  She could focus on branding herself as the TOP ghostwriter and build a thriving business that way. Or, she could nix two of the four items, like niche websites and affiliate marketing – and just focus on ghostwriting and PLR.

If this is the case, I would alternate my schedule – a day for client work, a day for MY content. This is what I did when I was growing my PLR store into the monster it is now :)

Combining Your Efforts

Sometimes you don’t really have to CUT something – you can combine your efforts. So for instance…let’s say your ghostwriting client contacts you and says he needs an eBook about high blood pressure.

You spend your time doing the research and creating his content. NOW you know that stuff, right? You have it in your head. So why not repurpose your research time into a niche site of your own? Put a page a week up or a page a day, whatever you can allocate time-wise. Use the same niche site to create your own product AND do affiliate marketing.

Again, that research is already in your head. So why not turn it into a PLR pack while you’re at it?

Of course always make SURE that your client gets something 100% unique from what you’re doing. Don’t repurpose the MATERIAL you created for him. Repurpose the time you spent researching the topic!

Do Everything  on a Challenge Schedule

I have that 365 Day challenge going on right now and I call it a lightweight challenge. You can opt to grow all of these things very slowly! For instance, let’s say you can write 8 pages a day.

Give your ghostwriting client 5 pages.

  • Give your PLR pack 1 page.
  • Give your niche site 1 page.
  • Give your affiliate site 1 page.

Your focus is now primarily on the moneymaking item but you’re not neglecting your own growth!

Everyone is different and will look at all three options with their own preferences. I would personally choose the last one IF I felt as strongly about a niche and affiliate marketing as I did ghostwriting and PLR.

  • Thanks a bunch Tiffany!! Great advice. Finding the balance between bringing in TODAY’S paycheck to pay the bills and working for the paychecks that will COME TOMORROW is not an easy challenge.

No – it’s probably on of the hardest things to make yourself do (it’s not instant gratification). It’s kind of like dieting in a way, right? You could go hardcore and use a fad diet and lose a lot of weight and enjoy it now (but it won’t last, so does you nothing long-term). Or, implement good eating habits, lose weight slower – but it stays off. No instant gratification in that but it’s better for you.

  • Aha! I’ve been having this same issue myself. When we started working on plans for the 365 Day Challenge, I knew I needed to trim some stuff and focus on a few things. Lately, with the headaches and vision issues from the headaches, I realize I need to trim it even further.

My dilemma now is what to let go and what to focus on. I have a pretty good idea, but I still haven’t made the “complete” decision.

I may have to do more handwriting and transcribing with the Dragon. My reading glasses are great for handwriting and all, but do nothing for the computer vision.

I take weekends off and that helps. By Monday my eyes are good, but by Wednesday the eye strain is back, so I’m going to have to work around that. Maybe only spend M,W,F on the computer for a few hours and the other days limit it to a little social media and leaving comments. I can print my research notes on Friday and have those to work from. That would cut down a lot of computer time.
