Forced List Building

It’s been a couple of weeks since my last post to the blog. I was busy writing various things for my business, but in particular, I wrote a free PDF report called Intimidation Marketing. Giving this report away gave me two options – require an opt-in or set it loose without any requirments for access.

Since it’s been a hot topic as of late, I decided to try releasing it as is, with no opt-in necessary. I wanted to see if the report gave me any opt-ins using a single link at the end of the report where I blatantly told the reader they could opt into my list and receive future updates from me.

It worked, I did get some opt ins, but not as many as I would have if I’d required the opt-in. I have to consider my goals – and part of my goals is to create a list of highly targeted individuals who welcome my emails. If I force an opt-in, will they readily receive my messages later on?

I’m still testing various compenents of opt-in versus viral release of my freebies. I’m enjoying having the opportunity to tap into the needs of my list, as they’re giving me invaluable feedback on my future products and bonus material. But I think it’s important to also sometimes build a fan base using the no-opt-in-required routine, just to capture the attention of those who oppose opting in to anything.
