Graphic Ads - Do They Help or Hurt Your Online Marketing?

    By Tiffany | May 11, 2008

Some marketers have said that graphics are out. Aside from having an ecover on your minisite, they feel that consumers’ eyes glaze over when they see an animated graphic banner ad.

But does that mean they’re completely ineffective?

    Not necessarily.

If I go to a site that has nothing but banner ads and a small amount of text, they’re right - I might not pay any attention because I know it’s all slapped up there for commercial reasons.

But if I go to a site that has something of value to provide me content-wise, and I happen to see 1-2 banner ads that are relevant to the topic, I take notice. Like the Hub Pages banner at the top of this blog.

Why is it there? Because I feel Hub Pages is on the rise as a valuable web 2.0 resource so I give it a prominent placement where people will see it.

I use animated graphic banner ads in my affiliate programs. They work on Squidoo lenses and it turns an otherwise static page into something that has movement. I don’t like flashy sites that are all movement, but stumbling on one banner ad that changes is a pleasant experience for me, assuming it doesn’t flash bright lights at me.

There’s a right and wrong way to use animated banner ads in your online marketing. You just have to find what works best for your niche.

    Tiff :)
