How to Handle Negative Blog Comments
I got a great question today. Someone asked me how to handle negative blog comments. It was such a great question and dilemma that I decided to make a lesson out of it for you here to show you how I might handle it.
First of all, the almighty power to delete or click Spam on a comment when you disapprove of it should be tempered to a degree. Now if someone just makes a rude comment like, “You suck,” then they don’t deserve to have a platform anyway. But if they present a reasonable argument (even if you disagree) or they get hot under the collar and want to debate, you might go ahead and approve it.
I’m assuming you passionately agree with your stance on the topic. So argue your point, but stay even-tempered during the debate – you are, after all, the host of the blog post, so you want to make sure everyone remains civil.
Another way you can handle it is to copy and paste the comment into a new blog post, using it as an example to present your side of the debate. I’ve done this before whenever someone emailed me something hateful. Use it to shine a spotlight on the issue and address it, in case there are others feeling the same way.

Thanks for the great post Tiff! I love the idea of using the comment in a separate blog post – it keeps you in control of the tone of your blog and helps keep “comment catfights” to a minimum! Thanks so much!
