I Will Owe One Week Marketing for Making Me a Better Marketer

Read that title and you think I mean because the One Week Marketing (OWM) course is so good, right? I don’t know about that yet. I’m still going through it. Sometimes ordering and reviewing a product and going through another marketer’s funnel can help you become a better marketer yourself but it’s because you see their mistakes, realize you’re making some of the same, and it helps you change for the better.

I can already tell that I’m going to learn a lot about my OWN marketing from what I’m seeing being done with OWM. For instance, I too have a product that constantly needs updates – my Squidoo guide – and it’s a big pain in the butt for me. Squidoo is constantly updating – so fast I can’t possibly keep up, so I need to find a different way to teach stuff like modules, etc.

I, too, send out emails letting people know of updates and when the first email I got from OWM was about all the things her members had complained about (crashed blogs, links to campaigns, EZA submission declines, etc – 3 pages worth I printed out), it doesn’t make me have a lot of faith in it especially right after I bought it.

And I’m never a fan of having to submit a helpdesk ticket and being told I can’t email the product owner, but that’s just me. (Correction: In her email to me, she says No Email Please, but then in the guide, it tells me if I’m confused, I can email her – so I’m confused about that. LOL)

Now the problem with a “update email” is that I’m now going to have to refer back and forth to see if what I’m reading in the main guide is up to date before I implement it, or if there’s an update in the email I need to apply first. I’d prefer the guide just be updated (which is why I’ll be working on my own Squidoo guide ASAP because this is annoying and it’s a mistake I’m making myself).

Okay today I extract all my files and there are SO many. I need them numbered – I don’t know what to begin with. Oh wait – there’s a READ ME FIRST file – yea! It tells me what to read first, so I’ll start with the OWM Guide – 65 pages.

I read the introduction stuff and then some motivational talk. It’s basic stuff geared to inspire you and talks about why other plans don’t work (what’s missing, etc). A lot of telling me what I’m about to learn – and this is something I’m not a big fan of when it comes to page after page. A 1 page introduction is fine, but then let’s jump in and get started. On page 16-17 I feel like I’m being sold to again – I already bought – but there’s math telling me that if I do the work, I can make X amount of dollars, etc.

Page 19 is where the work begins. I’m an impatient person. I like to get to the meat right away and as a former ghostwriter whose clients told me to beef up page count so they can raise the price, I’m always skeptical of fluff like that.

She and I agree on using free tools – I like that! Too many marketers try to strong-arm you into buying stuff you don’t need. We DISagree about which products to stay away from.

I picked a ClickBank product to promote – I wanted something non Internet Marketing, since I know you guys like to see stuff in other niche markets. Using the idea she suggested, the only one that didn’t have to do with money was about Bearded Dragons, which I know nothing about.

I also like to re-emphasize that you can educate yourself enough to promote a product. I couldn’t tell a bearded dragon from a bearded lady at the carnival – that’s how little I know about them. So I emailed the owner to ask for a review copy and any affiliate tools he may have (she didn’t recommend this, but it’s something I always do if I’m promoting something I don’t personally need). Wait! Am I supposed to supplement her lessons with what I know? Oh well, too late – I am – and feel free to swipe my tips when and it you wind up ordering OWM too.

Spent $1.07 on a dot info domain at http://www.bearded-dragon-setup.info – I did a redirect but while she mentions this, she doesn’t tell you exactly how to do it. In Hostgator, click Add On Domain and fill in the information for your new URL. Then on your Hostgator dashboard, click Redirects and choose the URL from the drop down menu and where you want to forward it to (in my case, the ClickBank product – but I use Go Try This to cloak my link and track my clicks).

Registered 5 Squidoo lenses here:

Squidoo.com/bearded-dragon-eating
Squidoo.com/bearded-dragon-supplies
Squidoo.com/bearded-dragon-not-eating
Squidoo.com/caring-for-bearded-dragons
Squidoo.com/bearded-dragon-enclosure

Okay if you’re looking to use OWM as a Squidoo guide, so far I recommend not doing that. She doesn’t go through all the steps, just tells you to get to work and then gives you a couple of specific modules she likes to use, one of which I abhor, but I’ll do it anyway.

I’m stopping on page 31 today because the next tasks are for after my Squidoo lenses are built and I have some learning and writing to do before I can do that.

Things I liked about what I learned today in One Week Marketing (so you don’t think I’m a grumpy old hag):

1.) Jennifer likes to encourage you to use free tools – from keywords to web 2.0 properties.

2.) I do like the way she uses Squidoo as a testing area (I won’t tell how she recommends this, but it’s a good tip and one I’ll implement for lots of things now).

Things I wish were fleshed out a bit more (and in all fairness could very well be elsewhere in the course, but if you’re like me, you DO as you READ, so you might give up feeling flustered if you got to one of these points and didn’t know the answer):

1.) What all does a person need on their lens? How much content? I personally know, but a newbie wouldn’t – they may think it’s okay to only have an introduction. Some basic guidelines would be a great addition. For me, I’ll do at least five 150-word articles.

2.) Keyword research – she tells what tools to use, but a bigger example of how to find the best keywords to use would be great.

3.) How to register a domain and then use your own hosting to point it to the ClickBank product. The reader needs to know nameserver swapping, redirects, etc.

I’ll work on my lenses and post more when I get back into the guide.

Tiff ;)

    Hello Tiffany,

I have been struggling with nameservers and redirects all weekend!! Maybe you are more fimiliar with Hostgator, but as a newbie it was a major headache.
Without some very detailed tutorials I would be reluctant to try something tat needed to do a lot nameserver changes. Maybe after a person does a few of them it gets easier.

  • Tiffany says:

    Hey Richard!

I specifically chose Hostgator because it’s newbie friendly. I can make you a video on changing nameservers – and I noticed GoDaddy lets you do it right when you buy a domain now too. Cool!

    Tiff,
It is such a pleasure to read your stuff. You are SO AUTHENTIC. I’m exhausted from reading hype. Everyone else should take note from you and get real.
    Thanks,

Great post, Tif. I had been wanting OWM for a while, but the price is a little higher than what I’d like to spend on a beginner course. I did eventually splurge on the lower-priced option and have read the guide once (which I always do completely before taking action to get the big picture). I, too, was very confused on the domain forwarding. I do have my own hosting, so this isn’t a huge issue for me, but I’d love to learn how to be able to link a domain name directly to an affiliate link so I can direct some of my EZAs directly to my product.

I will say once thing I liked a lot was some of her techniques for getting your lens indexed and increasing traffic. I’ve created a handful of quality lenses but despite bookmarking, articles, and self submissions, I get minimal traffic. I’d love ways to improve on that.

I’m looking forward to reading the next installments!. This is a product i was thinking about buying – not so sure now!

  • Peggy says:

    Hey Tiff:

Thanks so much for doing this for all of us. I as Ami had wanted to know about her product but thought for a newbie product $77.00 is a little pricey and no I have not purchased (OWM).

I am so happy to have found you, I do beleive you are one of the very few honest marketers in “Internetsphere”. I am tired of all the hype and half answered questions and directions. It is like we purchase an educational program and say OK this is it. I can follow this step ABC and get some thing done. Only to find that there is not a Step D or E and we will now start at Step F. With all the information out there you would think some one would make a real paint by numbers system that would connect all the dots. Sorry to hear OWM may not connect all the dots also…She does have a cool blog.

    Regards,

    Peggy

I have some OWM lenses that I’m having to go back and “beef up” the content on since starting your 52 lens challenge. It’s gotten very easy for me to do 150 word modules and I think my lenses look so much better!

  • Tiffany says:

Hang tight Prada, I’m barely into it yet. For all I know, this could be a very worthwhile product!

  • Tiffany says:

Hey Peggy! I agree – I try really hard to do step by step and screen shot it, etc. If I find a customer confused about something via email, then I know to go back in and add the info back in there for everyone.

Lisa – so you own OWM and you’re having to beef up content – how much did you assume was okay from reading OWM initially?

  • Phil says:

    Tiff,

Thanks for telling us what you think of OWM so far,i bought the full version, couple weeks ago, and still reading through all the material. There is a lot to take in and digest, especially if you have not made any lenses. I’m still working with Micronichefinder to search for good niches and good content which i can adapt for the lenses.

  • Amanda says:

    Hi Tiffany…..

First time i find your PLR minimart, I am falling in love because it’s low budget for newbie like me. And know i am suprise while you give me about OWM, i’m looking forward to reading the next your review. This is a product i was thinking about buying but i don’t have some money now to try OWM plan…..
Thank you for share with us…

    Regard

  • Tiff, I am so far behind, but trying to get back into this. Thanks for evaluating OWM. I have been torn about buying that product. I got took by a big guru and am not spending any more money at this time. Just plodding along trying to learn from you.

  • Ray says:

    Hey Tiff :-) ,

This is an excellent series you’ve started here and I can’t wait to read the next post. What you’re doing here can be applied to non-IM info products in niches that we have good knowledge of.

As far as OWM is concerned, I’m surprised she’s selling a newbie guide for $77. I remember reading an update of one of her Squidoo guides last year. It was a how to on dealing with lenses you were concerned about getting caught in the spam filter. I liked the idea (move the content to Blogger), but from what I remember, it lacked a detailed posting strategy or how to get the search engines to crawl the pages sooner than later.

Anyways Tiff … keep up the great work.

    Ray

  • Thanks for the great post Tiff. I have looked at this in the past but always been put off by the price tag.

Can’t wait to follow this live review through to its conclusion!

  • Poppie says:

    Hi Tiff,
Had a look at OWM last year & decided I did not want to fiddle with lenses…let alone learning another language, so I didn’t get it. It looked OK, IF that’s how I was wanting to go!

Learning basics like forwarding a Domain, adding another domain to the host, (without bringing down the Pentagon & a few satellites), basic FTP, making a squeeze page, making a freebie, converting it to a PDF, uploading it, adding a payment button, building a list, working an auto-responder, writing the auto response, blogging regularly & puff puff…I’m outa breath writing this stuff, let alone learning extra stuff!

So, I went for the easy way out…Blogger! & Wordpress & other real easy stuff!
    Kindest Regards,
    Poppie

You a “grumpy old hag”? NEVER!!!

  • GratefulAl says:

I came across Jennifer’s stuff a few months ago. It seems to me she tries to be sincere and express interest in her clients (paying and potential.) As far as her marketing techniques and knowledge, I think it can be summed up in “Get Started” and “Keep Trying.” I also see she puts a lot of effort in promoting the Wealthy Affiliate membership site. I see that as the passive income slant since OWM is basically a one-time income flow.
I noticed that she has done something I ended up emailing her about. On her sales page, she had large gaps of space in the text part for the up-sell to the $77 package. Kind of tacky. It is like misspellings and bad punctuation – it reflects a sense of laziness to me. Probably was caused by pasting in from a word processor which kept tabs or other junk. It is corrected now. I believe she has learned about and successfully applies the sense of what I see as “personality marketing.”
Is it then counter-productive to present a caveat like “(Correction: In her email to me, she says No Email Please, but then in the guide, it tells me if I’m confused, I can email her – so I’m confused about that. LOL”)?

  • Tiffany says:

Hi Al! That’s great that you were kind enough to email her about her mistakes and great that she listened and fixed them :) I’m dealing with car issues so I didn’t get to work on OWM yesterday but I will today.

  • Leonard says:

Tiff, you do realize with all of your honesty that you’ll never make it in the world of politics, You know that right?

    You’re awesome ;)

  • Tiffany says:

lol yeah I gave up that dream many years ago. My mouth gets in the way.

  • Nosa says:

I gave up reading OWM eBook few days after purchase. Like you, I am an impatient person. I like to get my hands on the subject and get started immediately. It is too theoritical. A step by step or howto book should be practiacal and easy to implement.

None the less,OWM is still a good eBook. It contains some good internet marketing information if followed correctly could greatly ehance your online business.

  • Tiffany says:

    Hi Nosa!

Exactly – 19 pages of fluff in the beginning isn’t necessary – we have limited time. We need to get step by step. That’s so funny – it’s why I did a tiny intro in Get Up and Running Online. I start it like this, “I’m not even going to do a table of contents for you – let’s dig right in and not waste time, shall we? This guide is good whether you want to sell your own info products or be an affiliate marketer.” That’s it – that’s my intro. LOL! Then I have STEP 1…

  • Bev says:

    Hi Tiff
Glad to see you doing a review of this product. I purchased it last year and read it all twice mainly to get a handle on Squidoo. Then the slap came plus some health issues and so I haven’t got back to it yet. Sadly, as you have pointed out, there were lots of gaps when I tried to do a lens following her instructions – thought it was me!!!
I have also been disappointed in that the only time I now hear from her is when there is a promo for another large program and Warrior as well.
We live and learn in this business – sadly the hard way sometimes.
Thanks for being honest – such a change!
    Bev
