Is the Opt In Button A Load of Crap?

This is the bottom of the opt in box that resides on TiffanyDow.com. Notice the wording at the very bottom – “I will never share your name or email address – period!” And I mean it. But am I one of the few who means what I say?

I’ve had to sign up to a couple of lists recently for product reviews and suddenly I’m getting emails from all over the place. I find it hard to believe it just happened randomly. You can tell by who’s friends with who sometimes. You sign up for one guy’s list and suddenly one of their good buddies starts spamming you. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

There’s a big difference between doing an official list swap and sharing someone’s contact information. With a list swap, YOU are the one emailing your list with some sort of opportunity (like a free report) for the other marketer, and the subscriber makes the decision to sign up to the other person’s list to access the report (or not).

It’s not cool to share names without your list’s permission. And if you SAY you aren’t going to share names, then don’t break your word.

Gmail let’s you add a + then more wording, to help you keep track of who has your email address from where… and who they share it with!

Then if someone sends me emails I will know who the culprit is and can block them, and tell all the world how evil they are!

  • Things like this online really make me feel sad, it seems all too easy just to go against your word. But that comment above about editing your gmail address so you know if they pass on your email address is a great idea. If I know someone has gone against their word it will definitely put me off them for life.

I agree however, there is a way around this…I set up a email address to send ALL my opt in list to then I monitor them to see which ones send me to other lists (and to see if they send helpful info)… if I like what they say and don’t get any spam, I unsubscribe and resubscribe to the email I want them to send to. Problem solved.

If I’m in a “mood” I will twit or ping.fm to everyone the ones who share my info…doesn’t happen often but sometime is just makes me “mad as H*** and I’m not going to take it anymore”…

LOL I like that Sara. I once got falsely accused of sharing names. The guy said, “Shortly after I joined your list I started getting more spam.” Um, Wasn’t me but thank you for playing! LOL I like that you and Lewis have a scientific method of weeding out the real scumbags who do this from just guessing.
