It’s Weird How We See Things Differently
I got an unsubscribe this morning that’s unusual for me but I want to share it with you because it’s a lesson in how we see things so differently – and how you, as an online marketer, will have to deal with disgruntled customers/prospects. Now with an unsubscribe, you don’t contact them after that – so the frustrating thing is, you can’t argue your point. But you really shouldn’t anyway – it’s what this particular person experienced and you have to understand it’s just a point of view thing.
Here’s what he put in the comments (he’s on my TiffanyDow list) where it asks why they’re unsubscribing:
“because it’s all about you…rarely do you give info that is helpful to me. I’m not looking for handouts but when you spend so much time talking and doing things for yourself you’re not helping me.”
Now this was after I sent out my email wrapping up my case study about One Week Marketing. And see, to ME, that is something helpful I was trying to do for my list. I didn’t need OWM myself – I know how to use Squidoo and make money from it. I paid full price for it and did a grueling step by step because of exactly what I’ve heard from my subscribers – they bought it, they quit, etc. I wanted to help people make a decision about it or help them figure out the best way to succeed with it if they had once bought it and abandoned it.
But he obviously felt something different. I don’t know what type of help it is he needed that I don’t give – it’s obviously not the right list for him, but here’s a lesson for you as a marketer on someone’s list – reach out to them and ask! I know many of you who read my blog email me direct with questions. If I don’t know the right answer, I try to find it for you – or find someone who does have it. This person didn’t reach out to me. They obviously didn’t get the freebies I’ve sent out – and they didn’t grasp that sometimes I AM helping you by letting you watch what I do when I “do things for myself.” There’s a lot of marketers who WON’T let you see what they do.
Anyway, there’s nothing I can do for this person now – it’s just disappointing to see someone not “get it” and walk away without reaching out – especially when it’s in regards to someone like me who DOES answer her own email and help people individually without asking for a mentoring fee or anything else in return.
Tiff

Tiffany,
It’s water off a duck’s back. Good grief woman, you can’t please them all, but your post is another example why folks should listen to you and buy your stuff.
You are a knowledgeable marketer who genuinely cares about her readers. I can’t imagine another marketer, even the great ones, devoting any time on an opt out. In my opinion this is what makes you so good. You will have continued success because you really care about helping others succeed. That the opt out guy didn’t see this is his loss.
I get calls every week from folks looking for internet marketing advise. They’re tired of being ripped off. I help them and then tell them to visit TiffanyDow.com.
Yes, it’s often remarkable how people see things differently. You still visit the Warrior Forum but I wouldn’t wrap dead fish with pages from that internet flop house.
Have a great day…and stop being so nice!!! (only kidding)
Regards,
Chuck Rosseel
Hi Tiffany,
I totally agree with you on how people see things differently. That is the crazy thing about interpretation. It’s like the old saying about we we all have and how they are all different.
I, as a newbie, take the knowledge you share as lessons, and very valuable ones at that. I purchased OWM and as you mentioned, I had abandoned it, being disgusted at myself for more money that I have spent and not followed through with.
Since reading your posts regarding One Week Marketing, I have looked at that program in a different light and now plan one revisiting it and following the program. And honestly, I think if it wasn’t for you getting the program yourself and following it, then sharing your experiences and results with it, OWM would have stayed collecting dust on my hard drive.
If that guy doesn’t see what you do and why you do it, then he’s at a loss. By reading many of the comments people leave on your posts, I know there are plenty of other newbies out there that would agree that the information you provide is far from just for you. You know how to profit from Squidoo along with other resources, so how would providing the information you provided regarding One Week Marketing possibly ONLY benefit you? That doesn’t even make sense!
I don’t see it as all about you, because nearly everything you post benefits me because I see it a gaining knowledge and too a newbie who hopes to someday make a real living out of internet marketing, the information you provide is honest, ethical and most importantly, PRICELESS!
Keep up the awesome work. Internet marketing needs more people like you.
Thank again,
Anthony
I’ve unsubscribed from lists because i felt the info wasn’t helping me at the time. It was either too advanced for me or I got tired of sifting through all the offers or just contributed to my info overload.
It is frustrating when one is searching for a way to make money online and there’s all these paths out there and you have no idea which one to take. So you follow many, all the time hoping for a bell to go off in your head signaling ‘this is the way’.
You start comparing one marketer to another, then another, then another, all the while hoping this one will show you the way.
Then after some time searching, months, years even, you’ve read pretty much everything out there and think you know this marketing stuff.
But the problem is you haven’t actually implemented any of this stuff and are still confused.
Then when you come across someone teaching simple methods and actually trying to help, you think you know that already and it is not helping you. So you unsubscribe thinking this is just a bunch of bulls**t and keep on searching.
Some people don’t get it, some people do, some people will never get it, some people take a long time to get it(in no way am I referring to myself Ack,Ack,Ack,Ack).
It took me awhile before i got over my newbie scepticism and realized you were teaching some good stuff. Now I read and watch everything you put out, and love it when you send me free stuff.
I may not be where I want to be, but you, Tiffany Dow, are helping me to realize what it takes to get there. (well… ‘cept for the crying part, lol).
Hi Tiffany,
Wow! This puzzles me why he would say such a thing. The whole reason I come to your blog, read your posts, buy your books and watch your You Tube videos is because you are showing us how you do things as a marketer and it is so rare to find this in another marketer.
To me you are the most unselfish and honest marketer I have seen.
Don’t let one person who doesn’t “get it” stop you!
I think you are terrific! And, I personally want to thank you for teaching me a ton of information to help me!
Elizabeth
Thanks Anthony – maybe he just wanted get rich quick – and I don’t do that. lol
LOL Hey I couldn’t help crying
Oh no it won’t stop me. I wasn’t crying in my milk about this guy – I just feel it’s so sad when someone quits without reaching out. If I didn’t teach what he wanted, perhaps I could have recommended someone trustworthy who did. I just see this as a lesson to share regarding email marketing and unsubscribes – because they happen – and I get emails from marketers upset that someone unsubscribed from their list and I tell them, it just happens sometimes.
Maybe he wanted you to hop on over to his URL and throw up a money-making site for HIM, instead of working on your own.
Come to think of it, would you do that for ME?
Wow! That guy must have posted that in anger because you are not an “it’s all about me” marketer. You’re one of the few personable straight shooters in the internet marketing space. Let him opt-in to a few of the ‘guru’ marketers who pitch you to death and offer little if any valuable content. I think after a few months he would have a different opinion.
Ray
I think he told me he’s been following me for 10 months – he thanked me for helping him all along. Just ended it because he didn’t that I let Dorothy have her say. I disagree with him.
Hey Tiff –
I’ve been doing this for a couple of years now, though I’m still not able to call it my profession, and I’ve visited a lot of blogs and websites that offer to help marketers get better at it. Some are more helpful than others and most, quite frankly, are not there to help anyone but the site owner. This is the first one that I’ve stuck with because of its obvious benefit.
I’d just like to say that I am one of those you mentioned, who has contacted you privately with a question on occasion. Sometimes because I’m not sure it’s appropriate for the blog, and sometimes because I don’t want to be seen as spamming your blog.
But you have always gotten back to me, usually within hours, and your advice has always been helpful. You have emailed useful resources. You have even referred me to third party resources that did not benefit you.
It’s amazing that anyone could witness your generosity, in allowing us to look over your shoulder while you work, and construe that as self-absorbed.
So there!
@Elizabeth: I agree! Tiff is one of only TWO IM blogs I follow. I follow hers because she is genuine and ‘real’. I have bought many of her products too! I have sent numerous emails to her in the past (usually in response to her newsletters) and she replies to every one!
@Tiff: Don’t sweat it
That’s just it, David – he apparently never reached out. Just got on the list, somehow didn’t think it provided any benefit to anyone other than me, and left. I didn’t get it
That wasn’t me, but I agree with Elizabeth above. Tiff, please don’t stop being nice. You are the only one that helps us. Thanks
