My Thoughts on Google + and Other Social Marketing
This might come as a shock to you but guess what? I’m starting to abhor the way marketers market on web 2.0 sites. After all, I was teaching Squidoo, Hub Pages, and Google Knol stuff – even have a “Twitter Traffic” eBook of my own. But eh…
It gets annoying how rabid people get when a new social media comes out. I get it, I understand it. But as I’ve grown as a marketer, I’ve begun using web 2.0 platforms less for marketing and more for relationship connections. Let me explain though:
There are some content-based social networks that I still think it’s okay to market on – Squidoo being one of them. The others, like Facebook, Google +, even Twitter – I just don’t really like it to be heavy on the marketing. Some is okay. Even probably kind of dumb to let go to waste, but I see people doing nothing but marketing – and that too, is a waste.
You just turn people off that way. People keep asking me about Facebook marketing. Eh. Okay. I don’t really do it. I have a “page” that I set up a long time ago but never visit. I have a page for my Squidoo free eBook that I created for the participants but I’m not there much.
I don’t run ads there.
I let Aweber Tweet for me but otherwise I pretty much use Twitter for random stuff.
When it comes to Google Plus, I’m seeing a whole new way of utilization for me. People who I had previously not interacted with closely, I’m developing a following FOR them. Meaning I want to follow them and get to know them. I love personalities.
I like to see your marketing stuff too, but if I can’t get to know you, I’m uncircling you (I have only done this to one person who I kept seeing marketing messages from – looking back on his posts, he never once gave me the opportunity to get to know him, so why bother?
I can seek out marketing info anywhere.
But there can only be ONE you.
And I’m not all into having a ton of circles, either. I either want to hear you – or I don’t. I have a few – one for offline friends, like old high school buddies, 1 for family, and one for online friends. I primarily only ever work with my online friends.
And I notice I start enjoying some people’s posts and their friendly attitude. I like seeing the Gifs that wouldn’t work on FB. I hate that I’m still scared to try a Hang Out. Why” I video market!? What’s so scary about a Hang Out? Because I can’t prepare – I’m sure. I always feel like a dork. LOL!
Now I’m not saying that all marketing on web 2.0 is bad, so don’t go there. I’m just saying – let me get to knowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww you, ya know?
I saw a funny video today that someone shared on G+ too. It was about the business brand pages on G+. Everyone’s mouth is watering like a starving animal: “How fast can I promote, how fast can I market????” He cracks me up. What are your thoughts?
Go onto my G+ profile linked above and look at my posts. Give me your honest to God opinion (got my thick skin on) about my balance between marketing and ME. Now how about YOU? Where’s your G+ profile and what balance do you have?
Share and Enjoy

I have barely shared any marketing links on G+ so far. I am *loving* interacting with people more on a personal level, including you! And I think you have struck a great balance. I have the same circles of you – family, friends, and online friends. I seriously am getting addicted to G+ though, it’s worrying. I want more people to join in and chat
(PS. I feel you on the “hangout” fear lol!)
Thanks Ruth! I feel the same way
I do love it now too – I wasn’t so sure at first. One day we must all hang out – all the scaredy cats. LOL!
Tiff,
Count me in on the scaredy cat crew!
I signed up to Google Plus, kicking and screaming… Why? Something else NEW to learn!
Maybe it’s time to hire a professional “gossiper” to make me more transparent!? LOL
–Bonnie
lol Bonnie i like that!
I just got onto G+ yesterday and am still trying to figure out how to use it. Nervous about posting anything because I am not sure who will see it!
There are some decent tutorials out there Sue but I can’t remember where I’ve seen them lol!
I’m really beginning to enjoy the Google+ experience, even though it’s only been a few days..
I went to FB long ago… spent 30min there & decided it wasn’t for me… This however is something else. I seem to be getting to know people I’ve “known” from the warrior forum for years.
I won’t be doing any marketing on Google+ as although I market on the internet I am not an internet marketer … So unless I undergo metamorphosis I’ll be there just to share info & hopefully a laugh now & then…
I’m sooo hung up about hang outs, I can “rite gud” but when it comes to something beyond the keyboard I just might freak out…
Anyway… I said somewhere else that I tend to waffle… Thank heaven for Dragon Naturally Speaking…
If you haven’t seen my poor excuse for a profile yet you’re welcome at
https://plus.google.com/110739252250869245517/about
Hopefully it’ll get you there
Michael
Aww Michael you’re just not there cuz you’re in your PJs like your profile says (me too!) So maybe we’ll all have a pajama party hang out one day!
I must admit I’ve fallen in love with circles and their possibilities. I don’t show the same content to all of my circles, for many reasons, although I guess sometimes people don’t see everything. I can well see how people can spend hours upon hours using Google+.
Tiff, I love your personality from your blog and your emails and I see what you do on Google+ as an extension of that. I think anyone meeting you for the first time would get that same impression of you solely from G+.
I’m not convinced I’m using G+ enough yet to make that impression, but you’ve definitely given me food for thought and something to strive for.
Thom
Thank you Thom! I always wonder about how I’m perceived. I’m snoopy and would love to peek at what circles I’m listed under. Bet a few that are following me have me in a 4-letter word circle LOL
Still can’t get onto G+
Still in trial edition with 10 million users?
Anyone desperate enough to send me an invite?
I keep sending invites but it seems no one is getting them
I just went to google + and I can’t get on there either. They’re over capacity and still in a trial mode? Darned if I can figure it out.
yeah and I don’t know if anyone I’ve sent an invite to actually has gotten it or if they’re holding them until they want more people in
Must be holding onto ‘em …. I haven’t received an invite. (I’m starting to feel like the bunch of people standing outside the nightclub in the cold – all the fun is already going on inside…)
‘ray for BETA testing. At least by the time we (and 1,000,000 marketers) get in there should be a whole lot of security in place
)
Rach shoot me your gmail email and I think I know a way to get you in. Maybe lol
I’m sure that someone will tell me I am doing it all wrong, but that’s ok.
Michael, you can shorten your url by going to gplus.to.
What I like so far is the ability to keep groups separate from one another. Not so sure my IM friends want or need to know that the temps here today were so and so or that there is another thunder boomer on the horizon. However, family might want to know about flooding, etc.
My 2cents. Sorry, it seems like that is all I’ve made from IM or I would give more.
Wendell
I like your viewpoint Wendell!
I went to the URL shortening service & when I saw just what they wanted access to I backed away.
Signing for that service wouldn’t be fair to the people in my Google contact lists
Hey Tiffany,
Sofrry for a long “post” of a comment.
You asked me to leave a comment about what I mentions on google plus so I figured I’d do you a few better and give you a lot more than what I already said.
Let me start by saying google+ (further called G+) is not a web 2.0 social networking site. G+ is a web 3.0 social networking site. I don’t know how much you follow the industry and if you know what web 3.0 is all about, but a large part of it has to do with this new concept of “cloud computing”. Cloud computing is about using everyday applications in a social manner.
Imagine no more microsoft office. Instead you log onto the web and create your documents. Your ebooks, your documents, your spreadsheets, your presentations, everything. Not only do you create them online, but you can share them with your social circles.
And believe me it doesn’t end there. Imagine every application being tied to every other application. Your documents, your social friends, your search engines, your video sites, your web pages, your email, everything. Sharing becomes a click of the button, who you share with is entirely at your digression.
Not only can you share, but you can assign various levels. So if you are creating an ebook for example, you can have a editing teams edit in real-time, you can have co-authors all writing and making changes at the same time, etc. etc. I think you get what I am saying.
Enter G+. THIS is what G+ is really all about. I anounced this was coming 8 months ago and everyone laughed at me. I have known for some time. The question is why is google doing this and how did I know?
I am a marketing specialist. Marketing is my entire reason for existing. In the recent months google has started to become less effective as a search engine. They have battled with spammers manipulating it at every corner. Then came this great news, Google’s pagerank algorithms patents were running out in 08/2011 and Google was not planning to renew them.
Everyone said how this would open search engines and give others a chance. I said google would release something big and something social that would change the search engine and guess what? 07/2011 google did.
We can see the first signs of this with four unique things. First, the +1 button appearing on every search result of Google. Second, faces of website owners appearing on searches (IF the owner has a G+ account). Third people who +1 a sign, are displayed whenever that result appears in the search engine, and fourth and most important, the +1 button is now influencing WHAT TERMS a website will show up under and what search page result it will have.
This is really only the beginning in my opinion. Imagine being able to collapse any website listing and seeing the stream of what the person who owns the website has been posting. Imagine being able to interact with website owners before shopping at a given website. Imagine results being targeted based on the things your friends recommend. Imagine results being targeted based on the types of things you post and share.
This is what G+ has brought to the world. Facebook, is a social network. G+ is a social cloud.
Oh the dreaded cloud! I haven’t yet wrapped my brain around it. Okay I got everything you said but if possible, please expand on this: “the +1 button is now influencing WHAT TERMS a website will show up under and what search page result it will have.” How can it do that? I love the imagine part you posted. Kind of scary too. LOL! Thanks for the clarification Bruce – that rocked!
Great G+ post – I’m impressed! Although there are a few Frankenstein aspects in this web3 vision, overall it could be really exciting to have everything stored online and not have to worry about crashing computers and exceeding your memory gig – )I had 100g of Docs, now I’m at 300 g – when will I ever stop collecting and creating !?!?!)
I definitely sense that you are tapped into exactly what is happening and where it’s going.
Yeah I don’t trust that AT ALL. I want control. Google almost scares me how much knowledge and growth they have.
Google + just like with anything else is a tool. If you feel that you have something of value to share with your subscribers then why not use as many outlets as possible to do so.
The problem with most IM’s is that look at these new tools with $$ in their eyes. They totally forget about the user experience. They totally forget how their subscribers may respond to this new distraction.
I believe that yo should choose one many tool that you choose to market with whether it be Youtube, FB, Twitter or Google + and go deep with your chosen method.
Go deep with one than shallow with many is my motto.
See it this works for you. If it doesn’t then don’t wear a shoe that pinches your foot.
Love it Skye!
I love G+ and have added all new people to my circles, unfortunately with far too little marketing maturity – mostly Squidooers. It keeps me from hearing their messages when they might possibly have something good to share.
I don’t post marketing messages on G+, yet. I really prefer to share info, relationships, etc that will help me more in my life and business than a one time sale with someone.
What’s your view on combination posts Mark? Like for instance if I made one post chatting about some personal day stuff or whatever and then included what I was working on that day with a link to the blog?
Well, its all your fault Tiff, I’m now on yet another SN tool that I might get addicted to. So I’m in Google+ now, and adding some of the people I have seen here, but none of my own friends are on it yet, so it’s pretty lonely!
I think this chat tool will be a winner because of the video talk capacity – even I might plug in the laptop one day since it has a camera.
I know I’ll absolutely have to work out how to use it for my Dad to talk to his brothers in Denmark. Never bothered learning Skype etc. but this might just be a “must do”.
But I have nightmares about the stories I have already seen from people saying they Hung Out without realising it – I might just put a band-aid on the laptop lens to make sure I don’t accidentally moon the whole www one night – ROFLMAO (literally)
Well I’m there – I’ll keep you company Helene
I know about the hang outs – that scares me! LOL Making note to self to turn camera AWAY from me!
Hi Tiffany,
Bruce wrote all that great stuff which I would love to have just one clue as to what he’s talking about, and also how does one fit all this Google+1 into a day filled with an offline business, running a household and tending a sick spouse???????????
I haven’t asked for n invitation yet as I wonder if I’ll work it out any better than my half completed Squidoo, Twitter and Facebook. I seem to get a certain way through and then can’t fathom the rest out even though I know how beneficial it would be to me.
Also at the moment I’m trying (very trying) to get my site “renovated” but as some nights I’m so tired I fall asleep at the computer and other times like today the garage had water drain through it from all the rain we’ve had and I had to get all the boxes that were wet and move them in preparation of re-packing them so bye-bye site today.
I marvel at those who can just “market” and hopefully in the not to distant future I’ll be one of them although it aint looking to rosy at this moment in time however I’m healthy and like a Fox Terrier (Jack Russell these days) I’ll keep on keepin on until I no longer can. Call me just plain hornery.
Maureen I just kind of work all the time but do other stuff all the time too. IE: The other day I worked for 1 hour in the morning, then took mom for a procedure, came home, worked another hour, took her back to the hospital for a few hours, then came home and worked a couple of hrs. Just have to fit in work
Hi Tiffany,
Thanks for your reply it’s been a bad week and I think I must have just needed to have a whinge to get the miseries off my chest, they’re gone now so back to thinking about working.
Now to try to work out G+1 it sounds really interesting and worth the effort.
When you get there look me up Maureen!
I keep hearing about G+, everyone seems to like it so far… gotta check it out too sometime – if I can figure out how to sign up *lol*
right now it’s by invite only but most of the invites I send out – the person never gets them.
I have a G+ account but really haven’t started using it much yet. I’m not very good at the social stuff at all, and getting up close and personal kinda scares me.
Tiff:
I think I’m really going to like Google+ cause we will be able to weed people out. No offense, but I want to communicate with those I admire and like and would like to know what they are saying ~as well, meet new interesting people. Marketing is ok, but in moderation. After all, how would we know about people’s products if they did not share.
Twitter goes too fast and you miss a lot. Facebook is the same thing. Maybe for once we’ll be able to connect in an appropriate way to be able to meet people and establish relationships.
I do like the Circles I THINK. I’ve created a few. I’ve only started and have not spent a good deal of time there, but we’ll see.
I hope this is OK, to share… IF not I’m supposing this will not make the Blog, but…
Jo Barnes did a FREE Google+ webinar that was VERY good. It can be found here.

LOVE the video you posted above.
Luv & Hugs,
Roz Fruchtman
Hey Roz! I was SO glad to see you on G+!
