Social Networking on Squidoo Case Study
I thought I’d do something fun – and necessary – review Social Networking on Squidoo just like I did One Week Marketing – as a paying customer. You heard me right – I went through the whole process just now – I read my sales copy. I remembered what it promised me. I paid money for it. Oh, I ordered through an affiliate’s link – whoever popped up as #1 in Google when I typed in Social Networking on Squidoo review – it was a Squidoo lens LOL! I figured whoever it was deserved the sale.
I got SO much out of my review of OWM (even if others didn’t) that I felt it would be wonderful to have my own product ripped apart while being implemented. To be honest, it’s been a long time since I read through every word of that guide. I have updated it, but Squidoo changes so fast that I know it needs an overhaul. In fact, it needs to be overhauled so that it’s evergreen to some degree.
What better way to do it than to break it down right in front of you – kinda feels like being naked in front of an audience – and here’s the kicker – I WELCOME your feedback on MY blog – even if you say, “Tiff – Social Networking on Squidoo sucked.” I want to know why. Why? Because I care enough to make it better. I won’t just say, “Oh well, there are lots of people who DO like it.”
No – I want 100% of my customers happy.
So I’m going to be raw and real again. And the cool thing is, I can EDIT what I feel needs to be changed after this is all said and done – or even as I go if I want to! Want to follow along?
I know my Building an eBook Empire is stellar – it’s rare that I ever get a refund for that and it sells well. But the Squidoo eBook sells well and does get more refunds, not a ton, but more than I want – so I want to know why.
First step – buy the guide. The order process went smoothly. I downloaded everything to my desktop folder. DLGuard worked perfectly. Here’s a copy of my receipt (I blacked out the email addressed and receipt #):
Okay – rereading my sales copy – I feel the headline’s a little outdated. It’s not just about capturing leads – Squidoo is a three-pronged approach for me now – it’s to promote tangibles via Amazon, digital products of my own or as an affiliate.
I can’t decide whether or not to leave John Reese’s testimonial right at the top. So many people who find my site now are new to IM – will they know him or not (at first, I mean?). Tell me your thoughts on that.
Moving into the sales copy – it’s not virtually unknown anymore. Gotta remove the verbiage about not being accused of Spam, since we all know they’re on crackdown mode lately.
I don’t want to edit the sales copy until you’ve all had a chance to read it as it exists now. Afterward, I’ll edit. Outdated stuff has to go – opt in forms are now out as of recently. Groups are gone (well for the most part).
I also want to add my 52 weeks on Squidoo as a bonus.
I discover I also now need a READ ME file to tell my readers what to read first, second, third, etc – something I complained about as a customer of OWM. (No, I’m not afraid to shine the flashlight on myself – me discovering those things is exactly why I wanted to do this – I had no idea I didN’T have a Read Me file in there. Now I know.)
Hmm how do I do this? On my DLG page, I have five different download files. Otherwise they’d be too large – especially with the audio file. Should I have them download a READ ME file too? Ideas?
I like that I’m told in the introduction to email Tiff, but I’m not given an email address to use. Of course, they’ll get an email from me, but what if they haven’t opened their email yet or they lose it and later want to contact me? I need to put an email address in there for them to reach me.
In chapter 1, I’m talking to the reader as if they’re an existing Internet Marketer. I talk about past instances like when we all got the MySpace crackdown. Well what if my reader wasn’t around then? What if they’re brand spanking new? I need to revise my wording in case they are totally new. I know WHY this was done this way – because the product was created because fellow marketers asked me to write about it for them, so I KNEW what they knew already – and I never expected this to grow into a product like this where Reese, Silver and even Travis the Bum Marketer was promoting it – to newbies.
Reading chapter 1 – if you don’t want the backstory, the what Squidoo is and why it was built and so on, then feel free to skip ahead but if you’re not familiar with the site, I suggest you read it. I like that chapter 1 goes into the lingo of Squidoo because I know this gets confusing when you’re new to Internet Marketing. People start throwing around words like lens, module and SERPs and your eyes go blank.
I need to take out 8 different themes on page 6 because that’s something that always changes.
One thing I like is that I told them in my Quick Note From Tiffany (introduction) that chapter 1 is an overview and not to worry if they feel confused because after this chapter, I’m going to go into step by step detail. If I hadn’t said that, they might start reading chapter 1 and see things like me talking about hyperlinking my Bio Box and wonder, “Well why don’t you TELL me how to do that?” (not knowing it’s in a later page). So I think I’ll make that warning stand out a bit more prominently.
Page 10 has my age – and I’d love to still be 38, but I’m not. I need to take that out. I like how on page 10, I go through some of the categories and talk about ideas on how they might be used. I don’t like that I mention SquidUtils in the Gardening category yet I haven’t yet explained to the reader what SquidUtils is – so they’ll be scratching their heads here.
Page 11 at the bottom says, “As you saw in the intro on my lens,” yet I haven’t yet been linked to a lens – so I have no clue what I’m talking about! I had taken out the link to that lens awhile back when this was reorganized, so I need to fix that.
I like that I do screen shots when I’m talking about stuff like traffic stats, Amazon orders, etc.
On page 16, I’m told to conduct some keyword research for my lenses. I hope this is covered later, or I’ll be annoyed. I need to address here whether or not it’s covered and if not, add it and tell where to find it. Also on page 16, I mention adding tags – but I haven’t yet explained what a tag is.
On page 17, the ghostwriting link is expired because I no longer ghostwrite
That doesn’t bode well – one of the early links is outdated. Immediately I’d be thinking, “Outdated!” I also talk about how I’m using Squidoo to promote DLGuard, but instead of linking them to my LENS on DLGuard, I linked them to DLG through my affiliate link. Now that looks greedy – looks like I’m just pushing product rather than trying to teach them how I’m using Squidoo. I’ll be fixing that.
Right after that, I DID do it the right way with my Building an eBook Empire lens link. Page 17 also says it’s better not to use Squidoo to make money within the modules, but through your own links. I don’t believe that anymore – now that I’ve learned IPK (Info Product Killer), I see the benefit.
Same page – another outbound link – this time to the PLR Mini Mart. Now I know what I’m trying to do – show the site I’m promoting and then show a link to the lens to show how I’m promoting it, but if I wasn’t me and I didn’t know my intentions, I’d think it reeked of overzealous promotion. I’ll revamp that – directing them to the lenses is enough. I don’t need the extra spiel about the Mini Mart.
I think I’d like to revamp this to show the different types of lenses – like an Amazon product promotion lens, one where I’m an affiliate, and one where I’m promoting my own stuff.
Okay I’m stopping at page 20 and I’m annoyed. While I’m learning lots of good stuff, I’d like to get started, please! At least have me register an account or something. I feel like I’m in school – doing a lot of reading and studying. I want action steps – so I’ll need to go in and add some. Instead of doing this huge backstory/explanation in the beginning, and then doing step by step, I may revamp it to be like this:
Introduction (short)
Backstory for 1 topic (like registering an account where I talk about why and how to have multiple accounts)
Action step for registering your account.
That way, people are doing rather than just reading about ME doing.
I’d be surprised if I didn’t have refunds right here just because people want more steps right off the bat and feel my guide might just be theory. I know time is precious, and they may just close the file and click refund.
To be continued tomorrow…

Can’t wait to hear more!!
I am going to find it and go through it with you if I can. I have so many pots in the fire, though.
Honestly though I don’t remember being able to breeze through it. BUT I also realize I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed, and IM, building things on the web, etc, are not easy tasks for me.
I once had a squidoo book that was well over 100 pages. I shut that puppy almost right away.
WAY WAY Way too much and overwhelming…
Anyway, can’t wait!
oh, and what’s this about optin pages being “out”? When did that happen???
Lauri
Hey Lauri, no need to add another pot to the fire. Just read and save for later
See, we’re always taught bigger is better – I didn’t learn that it wasn’t until I became a buyer, not just a seller. Some of the optins are still working, but they’re fading them out. The widget thingy that is. I forget the exact date.
Great idea, Tiffany! I like your style… and your substance. I’ll definitely be following your editorial comments here.
Just a thought: I’ve not purchased the product, and that’s at least partially because I didn’t understand the “Social Networking” part of your title. I think of squidoo as being more a “Social Marketing” (or content marketing) site, especially now that sites like twitter, facebook and linkedin cover most online networking needs. I realize you won’t want to change the title/url/etc., but adding some social/content marketing discussion and explaining the distinction in your sales copy might be useful.
I like your style Tiff – and I hope you’d be consistent. I read all the “fire” you’re talking about and I like how you handled it. Well for your Squidoo- I guess with all the changes you’ll make, there’s gonna be a re-launch or something?
I am new in Internet Marketing and broke for that matter. And I wanted to be like you when the time comes I make it. I just wanted to share that you’re a rare breed. I mean for a woman. And I so like the way you handle things – straightforward, what you see is what you get thing.
Keep up the good work.
P.S. You’ve lost one subscriber because of the hullaballoo, right? Just would like to tell, you, too, because of that hullaballoo, you’ve earned one – ME.
Great idea, Mia – thank you!
Awww thanks! I love that
Okay, Tiff, you got me to finally open up this ebook and start reading it. I’m following along with your case study.
Be sure to revisit the Lewis Smile reference. It’s no longer valid: “And now, Lewis Smile can teach you how to put a live opt in form and audio file right on your lens ā visit his site here:

Hi Tiffany,,
I have been reading your product review and I see that you have mentioned your DL.Gaurd.
I tried to purchase How To Write Product Reviews,,
I was unable to download your product as the message I received from DL.Gaurd..
THE COMPRESSED (zipped) FOLDER IS INVALID OR CORRUPTED.
Please,,Check on this,,,
Thank you,
Derek Berry.
Looking forward to the end results of this project!
I would have to agree, to remove John Reese’s testimonial and to include action steps early on.
Hi Tiff,
I like this idea. Have not seen anyone else take this approach.
No, they would not know who John Reese is.
greg
Tiffany, you’re amazing! Who but you would analyze your own products and sales process. I never even though of doing such a thing. This line in your review above is way off, though: “Iād think it reeked of overzealous promotion.” In fact, I think you UNDER promote your products.
I believe with most people, human nature takes over and they do not want to hear anything negative about their products that they have put so much hard work into. But I give you a lot of credit that you are willing to look long and hard at your product. You set a GREAT example!! I am very new to this and have already learned so much from you.
My 2 cents:
I would leave John Reese’s testimonial where you have it. It has positive impact for seasoned IMers. So what if it goes straight over the newbie’s head? It will soon start twigging when they purchase their next great course… In the meantime, no harm done. Besides, you wouldn’t want to be the cause of angst in JR’s life, would you?
Ami uses side-by-side images in one of her gift basket modules which I find very appealing. With her permission of course, would it be possible to include instructions in your ebook?
One feature I wish every ebook had is a reference section at the end to make it easy to find some crucial bits of information. Yours could feature your DIY 30-day lens building plan, hyperlink codes (with reference back to corresponding book section for more details), etc.
More internet marketers should review their products with a critical eye and update them on a regular basis. Keep up the good work, and than you for your help. Your commitment and honesty are refreshing.
Yes Tiffany,
You ARE awesome. I look forward to learning from the process you’re doing with your Squidoo ebook. I bought it a couple of years ago through Bob The Teachers link and I was very new. I did read it all but I don’t think I did understand a lot…at least I didn’t put it to use! I’m going to go through it again too because even though I haven’t kept up too awfully well with the 52 week challenge it HAS made me take way more action with Squidoo and I have learned a lot from that already too.
A BIG thanks for all you do to help all of us!!!
Hey Tiff
This is going to be interesting to follow. I’ve never read about anyone reviewing/ripping their own product before (it will be interesting to see if any other IM’ers will follow your lead).
Yep I heard they’re disabling it but not sure if it’s in effect yet. I think they set a specific withdrawal date.
Hey Derek! Did you email me? I’ll reupload the file folder. Email me so I can send you the file
Hi Viviane! In the Amazon module, the side by side images? I can teach that – I don’t need permission. It’s just my personal preference
But I can teach it
The reference would be great.
Hi Tiffany!
Great idea – isn’t it amazing what you find when you go back through your products from a few years ago? I did the same thing recently with a product, and just ended up taking my age out entirely….it is just too depressing when I see how old I am not anymore;-)
What did you mean about the optin? (Sorry, my head is a bit thick today I think). Do you mean optins in general, or on the lens……
I’ll be following along with you, because I just love how honest you are – you make it seem so “doable” for the rest of us to do what you are doing.
I have the product somewhere – need to go dig it out and see if I can keep up!
Hey Tiffany.
Congrats to you for having some guts to actually ask your customers what they honestly think. I must say it is refreshing.
Honestly, I thought your sales page rocked. When I was looking to purchase information on Squidoo I looked around alot which led to being on several of your competitors email lists. The information I received from your emails where awesome and I took confidence in you so I purchased Social Networking On Squidoo.
Once I purchased it everything went smoothly. I didnt really need you to tell me in what sequence I needed to open files. I read the Squidoo ebook first and then openned what I wanted to read next.
I definitley think you should revamp and show the different types of lenses ā like an Amazon product promotion lens, one where youre an affiliate, and one where you promote your own stuff. Ya gotta think everyone will use Squidoo to accomplish different things and I think if you give them an example it would help alot.
Overall a thought the book was really good and had great info. I did learn some things and I had never thought of Squidoo to just sell products PERIOD nor did I know you could flip a lens. I can only imagine when you try to make a book like this it is very hard. Not only does the net change all the time but theres alot more to it then just Squidoo. There is SEO, Keyword Research etc, etc, etc,. and these are all books in themselves.
Just a thought here but maybe you could give free lifetime updates for people who buy your book so if you ever revamp it you can shoot out an update and be done with it.
You are wearing alot of different hats and I think your doing an awesome job. Your blog is very informative and also if I ever have a question I cant find an answer to I just email you and you get back to me very quickly.
Sorry this is so long but just thought I would try to help ya out. Cant wait to find out your results and see whats next.
Hey Tina!
Thank you SO much for this. It’s so helpful! Glad you agree re: different types of lenses. That makes a difference on how you lay out the lens I think. I agree re: tons of other elements like SEO, keyword research, etc. And there’s so much you can say. Maybe I can just sum it up and teach them FOR Squidoo stuff. This is as much as you need to know for Squidoo lenscrafting, for example.
I already do have free lifetime updates
I always have – against the advice of all marketers. LOL!
tiff
Hey Tiff,
Kudos for implementing a good Tsun Zhu strategy.
Art of War – 1 of my favorite reads and i created (ghosted) an IM product for that book too. lol
I never ever thought about reviewing where i was until now.
It has opened my eyes to some glaring holes in what i am doing.
A valuable lesson – thanks Tiff!
One thing I really wish I had in my hand every time I’m getting ready to start a new lens is a mind-map or a cheat sheet.
I need one for each type of lens
- selling my own products
- selling as an affiliate (physical products)
- product review (IM niche)
I’ve had to create my own cheat sheets -
Step One –
list out all steps in market research
Step Two –
list out all steps to start lens (including which account I should be logged in to)
Step Three –
I’ve figured out which things I should do first so that when I’m going through the lens I don’t get confused.
For instance – adding a keyword into each title area, sub title and in the actual module – each gets a different version of similar keywords. I do this before I ever start to insert content.
Then I go back and do all the amazon modules.
Then I go in and do the IPK graphic etc.
Then I add in the image to each text module.
Then I start adding content.
Once I’ve learned “how to do something” and I’ve learned “why I should do it THIS way” (of course “testing and tracking” to make sure it’s working) – then I just need a reminder cheat sheet to keep me on track.
I hope that gives you a few “ideas” LOL…
I’m proud to know that you are “One of the good guys” and allow others to Know You Are For Real!
:0) debra
Hey Debra!
I’m not a mind map fan but I CAN do cheat sheets! I like your ideas too and it falls in line with what I was thinking about types of lenses
This has to be one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen an internet marketer do!
Your comment about being on page 20 and feeling annoyed because you need an action step… just wanted you to know that I felt that way too. It prevented me from retaining as much of the info as I could have.
I think you should keep John Reese’s comment in but maybe move it to the middle or bottom, and put testimonials of “Real” people on the top.
Ah good to know Katherine! I like knowing when people get frustrated. I think I am able to objectively be a customer and find the obstacles. Maybe not all of them, but a good number of them.
Very Old and very New To this. I want to starch my mind and IM seemed to be a good way to do It.I tried all the gurus and …..you Know a lot of hype and things impossible to understand for a newbie. Or for a computer challenged person like me.Your courage in putting your products up to scrutiny is just that courageous. you don’t go online showing success through videos of the latest car r house to affirm yourself you do it through your work and your ability to share with others .
Most of all what you tell us is doable …30 day ,52 week plans .
THANKS
Thanks Hill. I appreciate that you see the value in what I’m doing
