    Fat-Headed Internet Marketing

    By Tiffany | January 17, 2008

So this week I went to go see a dietician. Ever since I had 3 kids – well, my butt’s grown as large as my daily task list and it isn’t pretty. One thing she said to me when we were getting to the root of my eating habit mayhem was that I have to “legalize” food.

Of course, it all makes sense diet-wise. But then I started taking her concept and applying it to my business. For a long time, I’ve had certain things off-limits in my mind. Sometimes it’s things I feel are too technical – stuff I don’t want to mess with.

Other times I think, “I can’t do that – I’ll leave it to the big boys.” But that’s a really defeatist attitude in the IM industry. I’m restricting myself by roping off certain success avenues I could travel down if I only steered myself in that direction.

For instance, I’ve been invited to countless seminars to be a speaker all over the world – Singapore, Australia, the U.S., etc. But I always say, “No,” without hesitation. I felt like I wasn’t big enough (figuratively, not literally) to be on a stage with people I considered big name IM gurus.

I won’t admit to you how long it took me to say Okay to a telephone interview. Now, I do them without any sense of hesitation. I feel confident and I don’t even have “cheat sheet” notes with me when I do them as a safety net.

I had deemed 2008 the Year of Tiffany when 2007 was coming to a close, and I vow to make that happen. But it means I have to step out of my comfort zone. Kind of like I’m doing with food.

Letting myself think a piece of cake is okay is awkward and I fall back into bad habits of sticking it into my “bad food” column. But if I’m ever going to conquer my habits, I have to work on changing the way I think.

Same thing with my business. I have to start thinking I’m good enough and smart enough to share stages, join big launches, and go head to head with major product players if I want to reach the level of success I’ve set for myself this year.

Do you do the same thing? What holds you back professionally?

Let me know your thoughts here.

    Have a great day!
    Tiff :)

Tiff, you hit on something here.

I could write a dissertation about it but will just say we all experience similar thoughts in various areas of our lives at times.

Go to your destiny. We’ll be pulling for you.

      Hi Tiff,

Boy do I identify with your comments … ALL of them! Is it a poverty mentality, or just that our mothers made us clean our plates or “the starving Armenians…” (or wherever the focus was in each person’s childhood era)? As though my eating everything would help anyone. Go figure!

So later, these foods became off limits, forbidden… just as techie things we were told were beyond our reach. Even when we know better, something inside still holds us back. Those old insecurities. “Stinkin’ thinkin’” as one network marketing guru told me in the ’90s.

But we are overcomers, you and I. And that means we can overcome our old thought patterns. “Think of those things that be not as though they were… ” Think and FEEL the impact of implementing our new strategies and the technologies we will use… And it WILL happen!

Yes, 2008 is the ‘Year of Tiffany.” And the number “8″ has biblical significance, too, such that 2008 is the “Year of New Beginnings.” I receive that!

      Blessings and abundant success!

      Spot on Tiff!

I have only just started to realise this and I think it really is the key to success online (or success with anything). I was always intimidated by SEO and about doing the necessary things like networking etc and even building a business (rather than chasing a fad).

Now I have started to use SEO I am totally comfortable with it and wondering what all the fuss was about when I didn’t want to do it! Onto the next thing on my list!

My advice to everyone is as long as it doesn’t hurt you or others then jump in and don’t look back, after the first two times of doing something you are used to it and it is no longer scary! (for most things).

      Great post Tiff.

      Steve

      Hi Tiff,
Fantastic blog! It’s so true how we limit ourselves for no good reason. The funny thing is I have been telling all friends and family that 2008 is the year of Glenys. I’m not pregnant, trying or feeding, my 2 kids are 3.5 and 1.5 and are just a little more independent. I’ve just discovered the world of IM, and I actually know I can do this. I just need pointing in the right direction and I thank you for providing some of that.
I’m sure 2008 will be good to us both.
      Cheers
      Glenys

Hey Tiffany - this is a great post, and I agree that it’s hard to think of ourselves as in the same league with the bigger players.

However, the bigger players just had a head start. They aren’t any smarter (necessarily) or better. They just got connected sooner.

This past week, I was on the Internet Marketers Cruise (i5 BonVoyage), and during our mastermind sessions, I found myself giving great contributions to the discussion along side those bigger players.

Your style of delivery and what you provide puts you above many of the gurus/experts who fail to really connect with their audience in the way that you do.

I had my first stage experience at the end of last year (albeit in a smaller setting of the larger event), and it was great (if I can handle 14 year olds, I can certainly talk to people who want to hear what I have to say). I’m sure you would do great on stage as well.

I’d suggest doing a breakout session first at a larger seminar, or going straight for the big time without worrying about the results.

Or don’t do any at all - there’s no problem with that, either.

      Hi Tiffany,
interesting post! ( I received it being on your mailing list…)

I don’t often share my beliefs on this kind of thing - but seeing as you asked… :)

Give up sugar! I did it - it might seem weird or radical but it is one of the best moves I have made. It was difficult but just like success in business, mental discipline is required. I asked myself “who is in charge here, me or this piece of cake?” Society appears to want us to swim with the stream but i think great success often involves a battle against the current. And life separates the strong fron the weak. In my own mission plan, great health is one of the foundation stones I believe essential - as part of my business design! Anyway from the successes you have already had in life I am sure you are aware of the need for strong will… take just as much care with your body as the rest of your business and you’ll be ok. Just my 2c! Be strong and be well, Alex.

      A timely post!

Last year the thing that held me back was my inability to make websites. I was intimidated and didn’t think I could do it. Last fall I finally figured out how to make a website using WordPress and I felt so empowered. :-) Getting over that hump gave me a lot of momentum.

I’ll be tackling my next two hurdles in the next couple of weeks. I’ll be launching my first WSO for my copywriting services next week. I also intend to set up my first Clickbank product by the end of the month. Coincidentally, it’s a weight loss ebook so I’ll send you the link to it in a Facebook message (no opt-in form, it’ll take you right to the book).

Various aspects of doing a WSO and a Clickbank product were intimidating for me. I’ve had to overcome a lot of negative thinking and the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill has helped me a lot.

Best of luck to you in the Year of Tiffany! :-)

      Hi Tiff,

Leave it to you to come up with the best darn one-liner this year “well, my butt’s grown as large as my daily task list and it isn’t pretty.”

I about lost it on that one… It’s no wonder I remain a loyal reader:

You have a knack of making my insane work (over)load a bit less nonsensical- Kudos!

      Warmest regards,

      Mark

This is so spot on for how I’ve been feeling. And I’m glad you are breaking through your own barriers. It’s a good time of year to do that!
